[open] wide open spaces

Hydroponics was simply amazing.

It was relaxing. That was the best way Aerith could describe it. She was sure there had been plenty before her to make this observation, though. Still, it was comforted her in a way she'd needed. Even if it wasn't the planet, her planet, it still gave her a sense of peace. Despite it being an artificial environment ( Read more... )

Aqua had bought a couple of seeds and plants during the shore leave to XaXing, giving her a chance to try to grow new fruits and vegetables on the ship.

One was doing pretty well in the garden at the Masaki house, and she decided to try planting it in Hydroponics. As she began digging, she glanced up and saw Aerith.

"Hello," she said. "I hope I'm not disturbing you."

Aerith had been watching her, and she shook her head when Aqua spoke to her. "Not at all actually."

She walked closer, studying the ground Aqua was digging up and she smiled wistfully. "This just reminds me of home. A little bit." With that, she knelt down, smiling at Aqua. "I'm Aerith, by the way."

"I'm Aqua," she replied, smiling back.

She'd made a deep enough hole to put the plant in, and she started covering up the roots with soil. "My home world had some trees and grass around, but because it was in the mountains, the soil was too rocky for much else to grow. I loved seeing all the different trees and flowers when we had the chance to travel."

Aerith could certainly relate to that feeling. "My home wasn't the best place for anything to grow. I did manage to get a patch of flowers healthy enough to survive, though."

She smiled, thinking back to the church she spent so much of her time in. "Not many had the chance to see flowers there, so I ended up selling them to people. It was nice to get away from there and see what grew out in the world itself, rather than the cramped space I lived in."

"Nothing like it, huh Agumon?" said Taichi, leaning against a tree, sipping on a regular drink.

"You said it," said Agumon, grinning at his partner. Noticing Aerith, he waved. "Hiiiii!"

Aerith had to blink for a moment, studying the pair before making her way over.

"Hi there!" She said once she was close enough, smiling at them. Like several people she'd run across, they seemed to have also laid claim to a tree. She reached out, touching the trunk as she had every time she'd come across one.

"Seems like a lot of people are sitting under trees lately."

"It's the in-thing I guess today," said Taichi with a light laugh. "We're just enjoying a drink. It's the last one we've got from the last shore leave."

"It's really good too," added Agumon.

"Seems that way!" She leaned over, looking at the drink in his hand. "What kind is it?"

Then realizing she should probably introduce herself, she laughed. "I'm sorry, I should tell you my name before I start being nosey. I'm Aerith."

Maxine really, really liked Hydroponics. It was a lot more like open air than any of the other places on the ship, and it was peaceful. It wasn't quite wide open skies, but it was a nice feeling like it.

Maxine floated calmly through the air, letting herself use the winds she had as a guide. It was nice, honestly. She was just exploring a little herself, and enjoying the feeling of flying through the alien flora.

Eventually, she spotted another girl, and she brightened a little from her previous, serene look, letting out a cheerful "hello there!"

Aerith turned her head left....then right. She knew she heard someone. Turning in a slow circle, she happened to glance up to see Maxine in the air.

In the air. She did a double take, then smiled at the girl. She'd come across so many different things on this ship she wasn't terribly surprised. Still, it took her a moment to absorb the fact the girl was flying.

"Hi!" She waved at her, a wide smile on her face. "How are you able to do that?"

"Oh, I'm sorry!" Maxine said, once she realised why the other woman was looking around for her. She'd forgotten that not everyone would look up. Not everyone was used to having to, after all.

Maxine lowered herself, moving to float much closer to the ground, so that she wouldn't be rude. She smiled warmly though. "It's my superpower! Only it's actually from technology, really, and not so much my power I guess. I can alter winds, which means I can use them to fly, since I can carry myself on them. It's a lot of fun, actually."

"There's no need to apologize," Aerith said, walking closer to Maxine. "You're able to alter winds? That sounds amazing. Is it difficult?" The woman seemed to be completely at ease with the ability and Aerith was suitably impressed. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to just pick up and fly like that - probably exhilarating.

One place of interest in Hydroponics was the growing young tree standing to one side. It needed plenty of love, but it was growing very nicely. Its caretaker was around---that was Applejack, the little orange pony with a hat hanging over her eyes.

She spotted the new human, thinking she might be on the grand tour. "Howdy neighbor," she greeted.

Her greetings didn't always go over well, especially when people didn't expect ponies to talk. She'd have to wait and see.

Having had experience with talking animals, it didn't phase Aerith too badly when she would run across one. It was always a surprise to see which animals did talk though.

She didn't expect a pony - and one whose accent reminded her of a friend back home.

Walking over, Aerith waved. "Hi there!" She took a quick glance over the growing tree. "Did you plant this?"

Phew. This one didn't need an explanation. Applejack nodded. "I had a bit of help from a friend with the seeds, but I've been growing this one for a few weeks. She's comin' along nicely."

Applejack was proud of her trees. They were almost like her children.

"What're you lookin' here for?"

Aerith nodded, studying the tree. "I'm not really looking for anything. I heard about this place from a friend, and decided to explore once I found it." She smiled at the pony as she spoke. "I've been really enjoying it, I should have come earlier."

"Are we able to plant anything we want here?"She asked, already craving the feel of dirt on her fingers, that sense of accomplishment when she could help something grow.

Fuu had found that she quite enjoyed walking around Hydroponics, although some might find her habit of starting in the laboratory section a little unusual (but it was just so fascinating; she couldn't help it). Still, she always came into the garden area afterward. It was... a refreshing environment.

She wasn't at all surprised to see the woman also walking around. "Hello, miss," Fuu said amiably as she drew closer.

Turning to Fuu, she smiled in greeting. She'd spent a few hours in the area already, and there was a lot to see. She didn't recognize half the things she'd run in to, and was determined to learn about them all.

Meeting new people was more important, though, and she waved a little. "Hello! I seem to be spacing out a little here," she said with a small laugh. "It's my first time coming to Hydroponics, and I just want to take in everything."

Fuu smiled back. "It really is amazing, isn't it? It's so different from the rest of the ship, except perhaps for the City." That was almost as fascinating to her; apart from the sensation that the day was moving as fast as it would in a video game, it was a remarkable simulation of a planet.

"My name is Fuu Hououji--I'm still rather new here, I'm afraid. What's yours?"

"It's nice to meet you, Fuu. I'm Aerith." She gave Fuu a smile. "And I'm a little new myself. I'm sure it takes time to get used to this place - I've been here...." She paused, trying to calculate the time. It was hard to do so, time passed by so strangely there. There was no sun to go by, even if the light was artifical and followed a day/night cycle. It still wasn't the same.

"I'm not exactly sure, but long enough to start poking around I suppose. It's amazing just how large this ship is."
