Inventing a new spell; a most tricky and daunting proposition. Beyond most wizards. Lupin flattered himself by thinking he had a chance, but if pressed, well, he had helped with the Marauder's Map, had he not? He knew a thing or two about Defense Against the Dark Arts, and this was not dissimilar ( Read more... )

He'd been back for a while now, but the amount of actual open space besides just the city was amazing to Terry. It took away that cramped, trapped feeling the ship had once had. While he still didn't feel at home, Terry felt a lot more comfortable then he once had here. Too bad that feeling really worried him.

He'd come down to the river - really, there was a river on the ship, that was amazing - to have some time to think. He figured it would be better to clear his head here, were there would likely be less people then the city.

Turned out he was half-way right, as there was only one other person, an older man, writing something in a book. Also speaking to himself in a language Terry didn't understand. But that made no sense, wouldn't the ship's translators take care of it?

"What is that, Latin?" Terry said to himself - or, he thought he had. He hadn't realized he'd said it out loud, and not exactly quietly.

"Close enough, and most likely very inaccurate," Lupin said. He wrote a moment more before looking up with a smile. "The base spell is Protego, so this spell is drawing from that name. In this case, it is intended to protect against comparatively small forces. It may not work... developing spells is a tricky business on the best of days."

Terry furrowed his brow. "Spell? As in, like... magic?" While he understood that magic probably existed, both from meeting a few people on the ship and based on things Bruce had told him, he still wasn't quite sure if he could wrap his head around it. Superpowers, sure. Ghosts and magic and other supernatural stuff? No.

"Yes. I am a wizard." From a pocket of his robes, he drew out his wand, which he then pointed off to the side. "Protego!"

A shield coalesced in midair, a strong shimmering barrier. "That is the Shield Charm. Very useful, very capable against a large number of magical or even physical threats, but entirely unsuited to ward off the sort of small changes I'm concerned with at the moment."

"Protect small things?" Clef had been wandering along the bank of the river, enjoying his new pants and pondering what to do with the extra seeds he had acquired from the most recent shore leave. Being small and normally very quiet, it is not surprising that Lupin would have missed him wandering around. While normally he might have continued to be unobtrusive, Clef's interest was piqued by the uttered spell, whose words Stacy had translated into their approximate equivalent in ancient Cephirian.

"Protect from small things, more or less," Lupin said. He looked up from his quill-scratching with a pleasant smile. "It may be the completely wrong way to go about this, but everyone has to start somewhere, so why not there?"

"How small is small?" Clef wanted to know. After all, he was small.

"In this case, the small but very real forces that dictate when the sun rises and sets and how the world turns." So perhaps somewhat smaller than yourself, Clef.

Walking along the bank of the river wasn't quite the same as a stroll in Central Park, but at least Bronx was able to join her here. Elisa smiled as the gargoyle beast ran off through the grass then returned to her side. It wasn't quite freedom - this wasn't their home and they hadn't been given much of a choice when it came to the war they were fighting - but it wasn't the same as hiding on the rooftops of New York either.

It was Bronx, with his advanced night vision, that spotted Lupin first.

"Bronx!" she exclaimed, in a belated attempt to stop him from disturbing the wizard. She didn't realise that Lupin had already met the ship's gargoyle residents. "I'm sorry. He won't hurt you."

Not unless he had a good reason.

"Good evening, Bronx," Lupin said, with the usual courtesy he showed for a creature who was clearly intelligent enough that doing otherwise would be a disservice. He rose at the sight of Bronx's companion, offering a polite smile. "I've made his acquaintance already, though thank you for the warning, I'm sure if I hadn't I'd be alarmed enough to need it."

"You've met?" Elisa was momentarily surprised, but the gargoyle beast was a good judge of character and seemed to like him. When Lupin stood up and she drew closer, she held out her hand. "Elisa Maza. I'm a friend of Goliath's."

She rubbed the top of Bronx's head with her free hand.

"And Bronx's," she added. "I hope we're not interrupting."

"A pleasure," he said, shaking her hand as he smiled. A few things quickly became clear -- if he hadn't met her before now, she must have come out at the same time as Harry and Sirius and Cedric... No doubt she was who Goliath had been referring to in their brief exchange of messages.

"Not at all, I've barely begun. Actually I'm working on this spell for Goliath, so part of a larger project."

Einhart blinked, walking forward and seeing Lupin sitting down on the grass near the River. She was dressed in a swimsuit, having decided that she wanted to come down here to try the water cutting exercise again, but this time with real water rather than just what was in the sensoriums, even if it turned out to be not much different in practice.

So, seeing someone else here and doing what he was doing was a bit confusing, to say the least. "Umm... what are you doing?"

"I am working on developing a new spell," he answered, looking up with a friendly smile. "It's a very tricky sort of work. I apologize if I disturbed you at all."

Einhart shook her head. "It's alright. I just got here." It wasn't like the river was a private place anyway. "What's the spell supposed to do?"

"Protect from small forces, specifically, the sort that make the sun rise and set. I want it to be able to prevent shifts in those forces from reaching the protected person."

Quite complicated, possibly to the point of being mad.

From a small distance, Jr. thought Lupin was reading. Curious as to what the wizard was reading, he made his way over to the river where he sat. Once he noticed Lupin's hand moving and scribbling into it, though, he paused.

"A diary?" he asked, voice half-joking to catch his attention.

"That wouldn't be a very wise use of parchment and ink," Lupin said wryly. "This is business; I'm attempting to create a new spell, and doing it only in my head would just ensure I did it wrong."

"Woah, a spell?" He inched forward, a look of total curiosity on his face. "What kind are you making? How do you even make up new spells?"

--and then he stopped. "Er-- sorry. If you're busy you can explain later, too!"

"It is a very complex process, very likely beyond me, though I'm still going to try. Modifying an existing spell in my area of expertise should be possible, I would think." He said that matter-of-factly, without any real expectation of success or of failure for that matter. "This will be a spell of protection. It is based on a spell called the Shield Charm."
