[open] there's a place downtown where the medics hang around (hint: it's medbay)

Jul 29, 2011 16:46

Medical Bay had a habit of being busy, and upon the return of some of its members (including the head of Medical Bay) from Galilee, things only got busier. Most the tech needed to be pieced out, but some of it was usable. Discussion of making those small technologies replicable and training people in Med Bay in how to use them was only one topic ( Read more... )

The will to learn! meat_mooks July 29 2011, 23:48:29 UTC
For some, learning more about first aid and anything they can do to help the injured is what they're compelled to do. For others, it's a matter of professional pride to help instruct those willing to learn in the ways that they can learn.

First aid classes? Looking to delve into something deeper when it comes to healing? Talk to those in medical bay to set up contacts and get going!

[ ooc: if anyone wants to use this as a specific place to establish IC contacts for learning more about any particular aspect of healing/the medical field/first aid. ]

Medical!

Of all the talents he possessed, healing seemed like the one he could best make use of. Here on this massive ship, with ludicrously powerful heroes and gadgets the Technocracy would, if they ever saw it, need to change its collective underwear... somehow he didn't think punching and kicking would turn the tide of war.

So on hearing of a meetup, he wandered on in, hoping to find someone to talk to about joining.

He wasn't the only one. Aqua's only medical expertise came from spells, but her magic could be exhausted. It was a good idea to learn more beyond that.

"Are you looking for lessons too?" she asked.

He turned, saw who was asking, and smiled a smile that was a few notches on the charming side of friendly.

"I'd definitely like to know what medical techniques are like here on the ship. I'm interested in joining, if I can be useful."

Training with Rory! meat_mooks July 29 2011, 23:49:34 UTC
Rory's our lead nurse (and really our only nurse). He's willing and able to take on students to help instruct in the ways of nursing, adding to his current student body of one: Miranda.

Do you want to get involved in nursing? Talk to Rory today!

Kaya knew how to heal people: that was well and good, and she even knew how to try and talk people out of certain destructive activities, not that she counted Marco in that bunch. Despite that though, she wanted to know that she had what it took to actually be certified in that department.

So upon reading about nursing, she went straight to Rory, someone she though jamie might have mentioned as being one of the Doctor's companions.

Really, she DID have to meet him someday soon.

Rory still looked a little rough, stitches on his forehead and a black eye, though most of the bruising and burns were covered by liberal applications of bandages and a long sleeved shirt. He moved a little slowly, having taken what care was needed to keep him on his feet and gone right back to work.

"Kaya, I think?" He rose slowly from his desk, smiling as warmly as possible. "You're a magical healer, aren't you?" He rather liked Sakura's idea of mixing the two disciplines, practical nursing with magical healing.

Magic, after all, seemed to have a limit. Some people on the ship couldn't have it used on them, and from what he'd observed, some of the magical healers had their own internal limits beyond which they couldn't use it. Practical skills were useful so long as you had the right tools and were able to stay on your feet. "I'm Rory Williams." He offered his hand. "Seems a bit off that we've worked in the same department and haven't met properly yet."

Kaya had to do her best not to look concerned with all of the cuts that Rory seemed to have, not to mention how he seemed to move a bit slower than someone might have usually moved That aside, she wanted to be an attentive student.

"That's right," she said, smiling, "and you're Rory. Jamie's mentioned you to me before, he's a good friend of mine. Yes, I'm a healer, both by my bending abilities and by magic. The bending healing I had to learn, the magic healing was something I got when boarding the ship and making a Pactio with a friend of mine on the ship. That's a more extensive way of healing, and it works on worse off people."

Kaya laughed. "I know, isn't it? We really should have met sooner!"

Idea Box! meat_mooks July 29 2011, 23:51:09 UTC
The last few missions have been strenuous for Medical Bay as a whole, not to mention the excitement on top of those missions. Those working in Medical Bay may have suggestions, concerns, or ideas they want to discuss with the heads and group as a whole.

[ ooc: Can be used as an establishing point for bringing up IC concerns, where specifics may later be worked out OOCly. ]

"Would it be possible to start training as combat medics? Just... getting used to working like that in a group?"

Sakura looked around at the people here in medical. "Learning to cover each other and work under fire feels like it'll be even more important going forward. Definitively saying we will learn feels like something I want to do, or need to with anyone willing. Getting used to being on smaller ships during simulated exercises, what injuries we will need to be prepared to deal with, how to cover each other while getting to the injured and getting them off field..."

She waited for any word from the people around her.

Soren was a new face here, but he did have something to say on the matter. "Are the persons here not already trained for combat? War is not kind -- it takes swordsman and healer alike."

Or in his case, mage and healer.

"Not collectively," Sakura said, looking toward the new face. "If we've been trained on our own worlds, and I know that I have, it doesn't mean we know how to effectively work with people trained differently than we are. Which is honestly why I bring it up at all in the first place."

More honestly it had everything to do with the last mission.

"I'm Sakura," she said with a smile, not quite close enough to Soren to go for a handshake. She bowed her head in greeting. "I don't believe we've met before."

Sakura looked down at her data pad, then set it to the side. Settling back into Medical Bay after the four day stint on Galilee, when more time had passed here (in that flimsy way time passed here at all) felt odd. Unrestful even.

Still, there was no rest for the weary. Sort of. "Does anyone have a copy of our last inventory here?"

Anwei had had plenty of time in Med Bay while the rest of the team was away. She had done a painfully precise inventory, counting the odd mix of imported supplies and Stacy-provided materials and putting them into the system.

"I have it. How would you like it organized? Terran alphabetically, by frequency of use, or by when it was last restocked?"

haruno July 30 2011, 01:24:53 UTC
Sakura blinked and mulled over options briefly. "Terran alphabetically?"

She taps at her Omnicomm. "Here is is."

Then she lets the corners of her mouth drop in something that is not quite a frown. "Unfortunate that there won't be any new supplies coming in from Galilee." She'd actually spent a few hours fiddling with the on-board database, wondering where you would put information about regeneration machinery. Should they be filed under Wound and Skin Repair, or Surgical Equipment, or - most exciting of all - an entirely new section of the database?

Such were the thrills of a data entry person's life.

All this technology and most of it's probably useless.

Howard's been quiet since getting back from Galilee. Bad enough to get raked over coals in front of others, although thankfully Med Bay coworkers had been kept to a minimum. Bad enough to nearly get shot getting all this stupid equipment that may have ended up useless. Bad enough to get used as pawns in someone else's war.

Given that his usual demeanor is sarcastic and critical, his coworkers may appreciate the dampened attitude.

He stays off to the side, poking one of the machines they stole.

"I'm pretty sure this is just a high-tech water cooler."

Anwei had noticed that Howard was quiet, and wasn't quite certain how to approach him. Considering how cut up some people had returned, he might have seen something that had topped his already-extensive catalog of horrors.

She comes over and peers at the machine. Not the most impressive trophy, to be honest. "It's got a lot of filter-feedback displays for a water cooler, unless the water is really bad. Anyway, even if it isn't medical, Engineering can use it for testing when it gets to be time to power things up. Better to burn this out than a regenerator."

While she talks, one eye darts for a second to peek at Howard's workspace. She definitely wants to see his face when he does go over there.

"Yay. So we nearly died slapping stickers on a glorified Britta filter. Fricking awesome," he says. He is glad to see Anwei again, in that cautious, reserved sort of glad. It's comforting to know things haven't changed much in the few days they were gone. Besides, he has to tell her he liked the candy.

He doesn't have many physical injuries, just bruises and scrapes and skinned knees and a deep cut on his leg that he stitched up himself. If anything he's just exhausted. He shakes his head and starts to walk back to his desk.

He imagines Anwei may be one of the few to understand the weight of his words when he turns to her and says "so it turns out the Galileeans knew everything about us. Everything."

"Nearly died, Howard. That's the important thing, that you all came back. And that you're all the originals." At least, as far as anyone could tell. "I only wish there'd been something worth taking as a trophy."

Like, say, a few heads.

She drifts along after him, keeping enough distance between them that she doesn't intrude on his personal space. He kept that space hard around him, with the definite air of someone who would fight to hold the ground under his feet if he had to, at any moment. She respects that.

Her face freezes for a moment. "Did they take - no, someone would have said if they took copies of your memories." Her voice was sharper now. "Nothing quite like being slapped in the face with your own past. Especially when it's someone who has no business knowing it."
