Mingling at the Bazaar

Apr 09, 2011 15:17

Next to the Mall Hotel, a large bazaar sprawled out through the streets. Food stalls, jewelery stalls, plastic surgery stalls...might want to stay away from that last one. But since the bizaar was close by, it served as a good place for the crew to meet up and start their exploration of XaXing.

Now this was more like it. Rachel wasn't so much there to 'mingle' with the crew as she was to start scoping things out. Her eyes were already scanning the crowds and the stores, as far as she could see from there anyway. Hands on her hips, she looked for something to catch her eye-- items or stores, either way.

Jamie, on the other hand, is looking at Rachel looking for something to look at. After a minute or so, he wanders over next to her to take a peek for himself. Maybe she's spotted something interesting.

Unfortunately for Rachel, he's not really good with personal space, and is quite possibly a little too close for comfort for someone who likes that sort of thing. At least he's not leaning on her and trying to peer over her shoulder, like he does with the Doctor, which is something.

"What are ye looking at?"

Rachel turned pretty quickly to face Jamie, next to her. She hadn't really noticed when he had originally come close to her, and she tensed up for a moment, almost defensive, but just for a second. She was in a hunting sort of zone right now.

"Scoping out the shops, mostly," she replied to him, with a shrug as she turned more completely. "Getting an idea of where to look." Narrowing her eyes a bit, she asked, "And what are you going to be doing, while we're here?"

"Aye, well," Jamie replies with a shrug. "I've got a few things I'd like to try and find, so I thought I'd take a wee peek around."

Although he hadn't factored in the possibility of there being so many stores. It's somewhat overwhelming, and he's almost beginning to regret not selling his memories to at least find the area where meat or other foodstuffs could be purchased. Almost.

"I don't suppose ye would have happened to have spotted any stores that sell spices? Or tea?"

Sakura barely spent time checking out their 'accommodations' -- enough to know the basics of what was around, and to pick up a laughable version of a map (with an X to mark the Hotel, and squiggly lines of nonsense for the rest) -- before heading out into the surrounding bazaar. The open air nature was a hearkening back to the way of things back home, for all the shops they'd also had. It was far too easy to get distracted by the sights of all these new, interesting things, especially when over ninety percent of them she couldn't actively recognize.

Like this stall she was standing in front of now. Was someone really running an arm wrestling competition with a six armed alien slug-bird in the middle of a fruit stand?

Zouichi was similarly looking about at the stalls as he walked, intent enough on examining the contents of each that he almost walked into Sakura.

"Oh, I'm sorry," he said, blinking in surprise. "I should have been looking where I was going." Actually, Sakura looked like she might be a fellow crew member; there were plenty of them about.

Poking out from his shirt pocket was the head of a small baby bird, young enough that its feathers were barely beginning to come in. Naturally, it was hideous -- and apparently, someone had already sold it to him.

Sakura tensed, more a knee-jerk reaction than anything else.

"It's all right." She smiled, looking just past him at the general crowd. "With a crowd like this, it's bound to happen no matter how careful you're being." They were lucky when it didn't result in someone thinking to use light fingers to relieve them of their belongings.

"Who's your friend?" She spotted the bird, looking at him curiously. "Has he been weaned already?"

"Oh, ah..." Zouichi looked a little embarrassed. "Yes, or so I was told. One of the stalls was selling animals as pets and I didn't feel right just leaving him there. I thought that since the ship could provide food tailored to Alice, it would be able to come up with something for this fella, too."

As if recognizing he was being talked about, the bird gave a brief squawk, cocking his head to regard Sakura with one beady little eye.

"I've never seen a market as big as this one. It's a little overwhelming." Actually, the only other market he'd seen was on Gondeptil. "...I'm Zouichi. Part of the Security Department now, I suppose."

As generally untrusting as Tim was of these shore leaves-- he knew how some had turned out in the past-- and uncertain as he was about this... he had to admit to appreciating it, a small amount. It was out in the open-- but, more to the point, he'd have a chance to buy some more supplies. The plant suit was adequate, and he had his cape, cowl and utility belt, but he was obviously still quite limited with that.

For once appearing as Tim (he did need to do that on occasion, and he'd stand out less on a crowded merchant planet without the uniform), he lingered for a minute, near the threshold of the Hotel and the bazaar. This should be useful, if nothing else.

Jaime was getting ready to wander the various bazaars himself, so when he stepped outside the hotel and spotted Tim, it was a bit of a relief that he might not have to wander around alone.

"Hey, Tim!" He slapped the other teenager on the shoulder as he stepped up next to him.

"How's it going? I mean, I knew you were on board but I haven't actually seen you since I got here, I think."

Tim glanced up slightly as Jaime approached him, though he didn't really react until the other teen was with him, talking and gesturing. Relaxing his pose somewhat, he turned to face him more fully. "Hey," he replied, friendly enough, and with a nod of agreement. "I know, sorry-- I knew you were on board but I've been... busy, I guess." At least, he'd been keeping himself occupied in the month or two he'd been on board. "You?"

((ooc: I feel like this tag is awkward, sorry. :|a))

"Busy is the best way of putting it. There's only so much finding out that an alternate self was here before you that you can do before it gets old, fast," Jaime quipped in reply, smiling.

"Kinda glad to get a chance off the ship, too."

The very first thing was taking care of business, taking advantage of strength, a bag of holding, and pooled resources to get more meat and booze for Kang's bar. No charge for any of it, including flinging money at Kang. Just having meat and booze is totally worth it ( ... )

"Not very many things, really," Inara replied. "Some fabrics. Some massage oils. Incense, if this world has any. Candles. Really, the usual." Basically, things that could make her shuttle on Serenity feel like home, and things she could use, should she decide to pick up any clients while on Stacy. "Just the usual sort of thing."

All pretty general, nothing specific to get a solid lock on one way, but vague enough, attunement could probably help lead him the right direction. That, and a really good sense of smell in a couple of those cases.

"Candles, incense, oils... the usual? You one of those new-agey masseuse types?"

A mysterious smile graced Inara's face at the question. "Something like that," she said, nodding her head. "Well, perhaps without the new age label. I'm not quite sure what that means."

SHOP: ANSWERED PRAYERS (MASKS) hark_a_monster April 9 2011, 12:40:04 UTC
A strange man stood behind one of the stalls, apparently not caring to sit. He was rubbing his hands together as if in nervous anticipation, but the look on his face was smiling, almost serene. Above his head, the sign read, "Answered Prayers".

As people walk by, he was greeting them:

"Hiyeee! Welcome to Answered Prayers! We deal in masks that bring happiness to everyone! If you want to read the fine print, take a look at the sign right over there. After you've bought a mask, you'll become happy yourself! Have faith..."

A description of each of the masks hanging on the wall behind him was posted on the sign.

[ooc: The effects of these masks will stop working once you leave the planet. You can find normal masks here, too!]

"I think that one's looking at me," she says, gesturing with her head at the Mask of Stone. "Why is one eye so much bigger than the other?"

If Eva blinks, she'll probably notice that the mask salesman is now somehow holding the mask, despite it being behind him only a second ago.

"Ah, this mask..." he says, holding its grey, textured surface to the light, "It is filled with an appreciation for things that go unnoticed."

Yeah, he doesn't answer Eva's question. What he does do is hand it to her for her inspection. Suddenly, and seemingly without transition, he's stroking his chin thoughtfully, as if considering her. "Of course, it could also be used for great mischief..."

She does notice. It's creepy. And yet now she's morbidly curious, especially at the mention of great mischief. She has a murder to plan, after all.

"What sort of mischief?" she asks, almost hungrily as her mind races. Edriss' return has brought the savagery in her bubbling to the surface.
