The sound of the curtain shifting alerted Stoick to the fact he wasn't alone, but he was caught off guard to see that it was Toothless who entered. He watched critically of the dragon as it approached Hiccup. The dragon wasn't the only one waiting for Hiccup's hand to move.
When Hiccup's hand fell, Stoick rose to catch it, holding it for a moment. His large palm dwarfed his son's until at last he placed it gently back on the bed. Toothless' whine was perhaps the last straw as he wrestled with his emotions.
"Night Fury." He couldn't even bring himself to call the dragon by its proper name. "It...doesn't look good."
For a long moment, Stoick didn't move. He couldn't. His hand was resting on the dragon. The only time his hand ever 'rested' on a dragon was long enough to deliver a punch. But right now he didn't have the energy for tears let alone anger. Slowly he forced himself to relax.
He was exhausted from the combined effects of the healing and the trauma with his son. Physically, he was fine; mentally, emotionally, he wasn't so sure. But one thing he did know was that Toothless seemed just as concerned as he was.
Gently his hand moved on its own accord to scratch Toothless' head. If Hiccup could avoid getting eaten long enough to tame a dragon, then he would make it through this, too. Eventually.
"You are the boy's father, I presume?" said the Doctor to Stoick.
