And you say that time goes rushing by, but it seems so slow to me...

Any other day, maybe, the Doctor might be wandering the ship, looking for something interesting to pull apart or poke his nose into. He still hasn't had a chance to inspect the brain of the ship, after all, and there's that great big city he'd like to explore as well ( Read more... )

Forgive my lack of monkey icon changelingdude July 3 2010, 15:28:13 UTC
Said distraction would appear first as a green monkey watching the dish curiously as the Doctor fiddled.

"ook?"

The Doctor glances up, blinking momentarily in surprise - not so much at the monkey itself as at the fact that it's green. But he moves past that quickly, and grins. Being small and furry (and not a cat) is one surefire way of getting a smile out of the Doctor.

"Well, hello there..."

The Monkey chattered away in it's excitable squeaky gibberish and scurried along the edge of the sofa to get a better look at the funny device before looking back at The Doctor and waving.

He raises his eyebrows at that little wave, and then grins even brighter. So it can understand him, then. Brilliant.

"Interested in technology, or just shiny objects? Not that there's anything wrong with a fondness for shiny things..."

Luke had been on his way for a daily dose of glop--despite having fresh foodstuffs on the Shadow, the mess hall was a good place to meet people, and Luke was intent on checking in with all his friends and various family members to make sure they were all right. That, and mulling over events with a mouthful of goo had become something of a common occurrence for the Grand Master.

He paused, though, seeing the man playing with the whatever-it-was on the couch. He looked bored, and, curious (about the man and the tech), Luke made his way over.

"Hello there," he greeted, sitting on a couch opposite. "What's that?"

The Doctor glances over, without moving from his position sprawled on his back, and eyes the man curiously before he answers, "Well, it's a thing!" Obviously. Explanation is not this Doctor's strong point. "Probably useless here on the ship, but there's no reason it can't be... repurposed..."

Luke looked at the 'thing' even more curiously. It wasn't closely analogous to anything he knew, but he wouldn't mind taking it apart and figuring what it was. "What does it do?"

"It finds holes," he answers cheerfully. "Or... found holes, to be more accurate. When you're on a ship flying through one great big gap between universes, it... doesn't do much good anymore."

"That looks useful," Ben noted, flopping into one of the squashy chairs with a tray full of nutri-goo.

"Used to be useful," the Doctor corrects absently, glancing over to the boy with a faint smile. "Was once... useful. Not so sure anymore."

"What did it do before?"

"I was looking for a hole in reality once. A while ago." He glances to one of the windows, and smirks faintly. "I think I can more or less find those on my own these days."

"What's that?"

Hello, Doctor, have a little Komali peering st you from excessively short range. How in the world he snuck up to the couch so quietly is another matter- a mystery for the ages.

"It looks neat," He continued, blinking enormous red eyes up at the device, "Can I touch it?"

The Doctor hadn't noticed Komali until he spoke. He starts, twisting around abruptly until he's mostly upright... and then makes every effort to pretend he wasn't just startled by a small child.

"Hello there! I, uh... 'course you can!" Which is not what he'd say to everyone, but... well. Komali's a child-shaped thing, and the Doctor's pretty fond of those. He holds the little device out for inspection. "It's just... something I happened to have in my pockets."

There are a lot of things he 'happens to have in his pockets'. It helps that they're bigger on the inside.

"It's too big for a pocket," Komali objected, but took the doo-dad cheerfully in hand, turning it over to look at it from various angles, for all the world like a dignified judge looking over an entry in a dog show for flaws.

"It's very nice," He pronounced, solemnly, in a way that implied he was patronizing the Doctor, "Does it do anything?"

"Not for my pockets," the Doctor answers simply, and tries not to smile as Komali evaluates the object and gives his opinion. He just barely manages to hold it back. "It picks up energy that leaks out of holes in the universe, or sort of... portals between different parts of time and space. And when it finds them, it does this!"

He reaches over to hit a button - the on switch, as a matter of fact. The whole thing lights up and starts beeping loudly, while the dish whirls in a rapid circle on top; being aboard Stacy is apparently too much input for the device to give any useful information.

Ba'al, to a point, was still nursing his wounds - so to speak. Physically there was little (and what there was was healing at a fairly rapid rate, thanks to his biology), but he too was quite annoyed by everything. His pride had taken a slight shot from recent events, but also he felt there was much incompetence - and too little known for certain. Surely, the crew would have to improve greatly before they next faced such a force ( ... )

((OOC: Yay! And sorry it took me so long to reply - it would be awesome if LJ would give me my notifs on time. :\))

The Doctor had noticed the man in the suit out of the corner of his eye, but he doesn't actually pay him any mind until he speaks. Glancing up, the Doctor snorts softly, not quite a laugh, and answers, "This isn't busy. This is bored. And... some other things, but mostly bored."

Ba'al nodded at that, giving something of a laugh - and it was genuine enough, too. "I suppose that is a burden we must all face," he replied. As he spoke, he moved his hands from behind his back, attempting to adopt a more relaxed pose. "There is only so much to do with our time, here. It is best not to spend it worrying."

((ooc: it's fine! :) No rush. I can be a slow tagger sometimes, anyway.))

"Suppose so." He sighs and rolls his eyes a bit as he shifts around on the couch to sit more or less upright, getting a better look at the man now that he's oriented in the right direction.

"I just assumed that if you're going to kidnap a bunch of people to save reality..." Pause. "Realities... you'd want to be a bit... I dunno, faster about the saving part."
