Another hated hospital or medbay

Jul 01, 2010 17:31

Dean never liked hospitals. Bad things always went down in hospitals. Especially death. And he thought he remembered briefly seeing that reaper Tessa, or maybe it was just a delerious dream from his injuries. No matter, once again he skirted death, and is living. Again. Awesome ( Read more... )

It had taken her longer than she liked to get to others in the medbay, but Kaylee finally found her way over to Dean. She moved gingerly, avoiding any jostling of the bruised ribs on her left side, and was careful to keep bandaged arms out of his line of sight for the time being. Hopefully the grin on her face would be enough to distract from too much worrying on his part.

"Been slow to give 'em out to everybody," she assured him, sliding up next to his bed. "Just wait it out, shouldn't be too much longer."

Dean started to grin a little at the sight of her, but it faded as he looked her over. Sorry, Kaylee, he saw how you were moving.

"Yeah, hey, what happened, babe?" He reached out to her, trying to touch her cheek. "How bad they get you?"

Yes it really doesn't matter how he was at Death's door again when it's somebody else he cares about who's in trouble.

A sigh. Well, if he saw, no point in hiding anything.

"It's nothin', just some bruisin'." And scraping. And burning. "Got knocked around a little, s'all." She moved up close enough that she could rest her cheek in his hand, bandaged fingers coming to rest over his, and sat on the edge of the bed. It was as close to him as she dared to get, for fear of hurting him at all.

Dean beckoned her closer, his breathing was better with the healing lung. Barely a wheeze now thanks to the regenators they had him on. Still sore as hell, but that was like a paper cut to a Winchester.

"Looks more than just a little bruisin' Sunshine. You all right?" His thumb idly rubbed against her cheek.

Kyle walked into the medbay, and immediately made his way over to Dean. He smiled when he saw he was awake, and yelling no less. Always a good sign that the recovery had started. He'd been worried he'd still find him in critical condition. "Well somebody is feeling better. Sorry I couldn't come earlier. I was getting Arha settled back in at home. How you doing?"

Well he still wasn't any shape to get around. Still wheezing and getting out of breath easily. But still stubborn as hell, and Dean was too full of restless energy to hang around somewhere long.

"Just peachy, but the wardens aren't letting me out on parole yet," Dean scowled.

"Might have something to do with how injured you were. I know these doctor's seem like a massive pain in the rear getting all concerned just because someone has issues breathing. Insane I know, but I hear that can be dangerous." At this rate he was going to have a full time job just trying to keep people in their medbay beds. "Just slow down, and take your time healing up alright? I need you good shape for the training we're going to have. Would be rather embarrassing to have one of the assistant instructors collapse because he didn't listen to the medical staff."

"You had me pretty worried as it was."

"I'm good," Dean gave a thumbs up, but then started coughing and gasping. He tried his best to hide the wince as pain flared in his chest as result.

He got it under control, and then said, joking, "See? Totally under control, coach. Don't keep me on the sidelines."

Haku was doing something wholly unusual for him- visiting sick bay when he didn't, expressly, have to. But Dean Winchester was a friend, and Haku owed him a great boon for his part.

"Hello, Dean," He greeted quietly, smiling at the man's impatient outburst, "Aren't you hurt?"

He remembered the river god, and was glad he was doing better.

"Hey Haku, and I'm fine. But the Doc's not convinced yet."

Dean wasn't that fine yet, but he's always downplayed his injuries.

"Do you want to escape?" He asked, only partly joking, and canted his head to the side for a better angle. It made his bangs fall partly across one eye and when the boy smiled it was in a way that reminded why gods and spirits had rightly inspired the phrase 'we dare not go a-hunting, for fear of little men.'

"I don't like it here, either. If you're strong enough to walk, I can make sure they don't see either of us leave."

"Hell yeah. Let's go," Dean started to get up, but then wavered and gasped before coughing and wheezing more. Dammit. He scowled once he got it under control, still sitting on the bed. He started to try again, still wavering. He could do this. Really. Stupid lungs.

Funny thing about helping alongside someone: you actually want to check up on that person and make sure that he is doing better. She had seen him when he was basically coherent, so now she wanted to see him better, when he seemed to be pacing in his own way about getting out of the medbay.

She had a similar feeling when she was stuck in the Brig for a long time.

"Hey Dean," she greeted, and brought him a little box. "I made some pastries with the stuff I picked up on shore leave. The instructions weren't that hard, actually!"

Oh man, real food. Katara, you just became one of Dean's favorite people.

He was pacing as much as he could from a hospital bed, but definitely on edge. Still he grinned a bit.

"Did I tell you lately how awesome you are? I mean first the firefighting skills with the water, and the healing, and now food?"

"I figured you might want something more than Stacey slop," Katara said, not being able to help the smile. That sort of behavior was contagious. "I hope they're good, it was my first time cooking them, but everything seems to be okay from what I saw."

She put them by the hospital bed, but shook her head.

"I'm not awesome: I shouldn't have let you go further into the house without more protection. I thought Aeneas could handle it while I was gone, but I underestimated how farther in you'd go. For that...I'm sorry. I should have been concerned about what was happening in the house, and not the Ohm that was destroying another house and trying to set more on fire. I just thought if we didn't get to it in time, it would have killed more people. But I should have been focusing on you. That was my fault."

And she hung her head here. "I'm really glad you're doing better."

Dean frowned at that, "Ok, stop right there. This is NOT your fault all right? I chose to go in and get those people out. My own fault for taking so long with it. It would have been a waste if you guys weren't there stopping the Ohm. We would have been sending them right to their execution otherwise. Those people and the Ohm take priority, got it? No matter what."

He sighed and sagged back, "Trust me, I'm not worth it. You did the right thing."

"Hey, fucker." So the fuck what? She'd been sitting there for awhile with a plate of serious Mexican food that she'd finally gone to make in the damn Sensoriums. And she'd done it by motherfucking hand, too. The tortillas, the (okay, so it wasn't chicken, but it was pretty close) masa tomales, the onions and beans that had taken the night to soak before she made them re-fried with gobs of cheese.

"Don't bust anything yelling," she advised. She had beer, too, from the fucking tree. Two of them. "If you want to get your ass up, get up and stop bitching about it." She had her own bruises, her lip was split, and her arm was in a...planty sling where it had been sliced by an Ohm just before she blew its head off.

"I'll punch a motherfucker, if you want," she said, eyebrows arched. "After the food's gone."

More real food, and it smelled AMAZING. Reminded him of an awesome Tex Mex place out of Beaumont. And beer! He didn't freaking what the docs thought. This was healing food.

"Shit...this looks awesome." He struggled to get up, cursing the wheezing, and wavered on his feet. Dammit.

"Better be awesome, I spent forever putting it together," she said and booted a chair that slid clear across from the doorway to stop at his knee. She scowled at him and wandered over to set the tray of food down. She made enough for two because the fucking tomales had her salivating like a fucking dog. The beer? She popped both tops and flicked their caps onto the tray.

"Fuckhead, sit your ass down. I'm not gonna scrape beans out of your hair if you do a motherfucking swan dive in my Mexican goddamn dinner."

"Fuck!" He swore at the chair, and almost fell over anyway. Dean just managed to right himself, and flopped into the chair. And granted the smell of the food was making him drool just as much.

"I'm good, and thanks. Kickass food," he grinned as he scooped a large bite of the tomales with the cheese hanging down in greasy strings. He swallowed and washed it down with one of the beers, making happy moans over the food.
