He didn't really think he would get out of explaining all of this to her, did he? She's here now. She's also giving him the look. He can pretend he doesn't see it all he want, but she will get his story eventually.
Grif will probably smell Scout coming before he sees him. He's carrying something delicious and greasy as shown by the soaked paper bag. He is also sauntering in agonizingly slow (They may be friends but Scout is still kind of a jerk. Just less so).
Despite Doc's almost unending cheerfulness, he had to admit what Grif had done was sheer idiocy. If had paid attention most people on the ship wouldn't want to kill him.
"Grif. What the heck were you thinking? As one of the ship medics it's my job to keep you from dying and that was something Caboose would have done."
"If you actually paid attention for once, and checked your omnicomm you'd know that the Aang person wasn't the Nightmare King. Even I paid enough attention to that."
"Doc, I have never even pretended to pay attention to what's going on around here. Why would people expect me to do any different?"
Most of Grif's efforts lie in the area of avoiding Tex, Samus, and the Major. Besides that, he's discovered he can mostly get away with ignoring everything.
Katara grinned. "Well," she said, "I was just planning to talk. It helps to pass the time when you're in here, believe me, learned from experience. Besides, I'm kinda curious as to why you shot Aang. Don't worry, I'm not here to kill you...though I'm sure Sokka and Toph nearly tried to when they caught up with you."
Yes Grif, you are very lucky Aang isn't dead. She's so happy he's alive, nothing could kill her mood. Nothing.
"But I've heard a lot about you, actually. The infamous Grif and all."
"Sokka and Toph. The kid with the boomerang and the one I'm not sure if she's a little girl or a rhino? If so, then yes they did." And they left quite an impression. (Not one in his skull, thankfully, but it's not for lack of effort.)
He sits up on the edge of the cot. "I'm 'infamous', huh?"
On the plus side, there's one more visitor to make Grif's time in the brig a little less boring. On the negative side? It's Tex.
Tex's hologram flares to life as she jumps to his armor, and shakes her head as she reorients herself. "That was a lot easier than I thought it'd be." Of course, there also wasn't the issue of needing to be slingshot into a normally AI-free zone, either. She peers over at Grif from his shoulder. "So you're still in one piece."
Grif jumps, succeeding in flailing off the cot and onto the floor of the cell. He scrambles and manages to get back to his feet. He glares at the spot where Tex was when he was lying there, then turns his head as he remembers she's probably still hovering by his shoulder.

Maybe if he ignores it, it will go away.

"I was thinking that there was a Nightmare King loose and I was the only person with brains enough to be trying to kill it."

This is a better greeting than he expected to get from her, considering he just recently almost killed her boyfriend.
"...Depends on why you want to," he replies. Wary, a little surprised, but not outright defensive.

"Don't do that!"

He's a little too agitated to comment on how weird it is that she could feel him falling off the cot.
