All-in-all, it hadn't been her easiest birth. Her first had been long and drawn out, but there had been warm, loving arms waiting for her at the end. Her second had been painful, but the Lifestream, and all she cared for still waited for her ( Read more... )

When Billy passed by the Observation Deck on the way to the library, he hadn't expected to stop, but some quality of the woman's voice caught his attention. To him, his time so far aboard Stacy had been a far cry from the grand space adventures he'd dreamed about as a child. He'd experienced failure, loss, and now the complete destruction of his world.

Yet...this new woman had a point. Here they were, watching stars shoot by. For someone who had been grounded all their life, this was a novel experience. All in all, as far as prisons went, their accommodations weren't so bad.

"After all this time, I've never thought of our predicament in that light. As a journey, I mean," he mused quietly. Yes, ma'am, a curious young man wearing glasses has suddenly appeared to watch the stars a short distance away from you. Don't worry, he's harmless.

She never worried whether anyone were dangerous. Which was a strange thing to think, considering the fact that most of the people she'd met in her life were dangerous in one way or another. One could almost always tell just by looking, whether a person were trustworth, anyway.

She smiled, as she turned her head to greet the young man. "Isn't that what they said? That we're traveling to meet them?"

A little girl, no more than 13 or 14, looks out at the stars with her, then at her.

"It doesn't . . . make you feel small?" she asks, looking a little small herself, sad and pale and drawn into herself.

Aeris smiled at the young girl, and shook her head. "Why should it? We're not alone. We are all of us together, and connected in our own ways with Stacy as well."

She sighs, lowering her head. "I know. I just . . . I miss everyone I knew before here." She looks sadly out the window again. "It'd be easier not to feel alone if I didn't . . . well, feel so lonely without them."

She reached out at touched the young woman's shoulder, and offered a small smile. "They say that the ones we love are with us, sleeping in the endless cavern of people. Close your eyes and reach out to them, if you're patient and quiet, you'll feel their life force."
