The picture was slowly taking shape. Two pictures, actually.
The first appeared to be a group photo of some kind. There were a number of mostly men, but a few women in the picture. Perhaps two or three of them could have been the rough-and-tumble sort, but for the most part they looked decidedly... well, maybe nerdy would be the best way to put it. Several of them were in long white lab coats; all were smiling. At least all of them that Jake could make out. The picture was strangely grainy for some reason, which no doubt would strike him as rather strange, considering the fairly high-tech setup of the rest of the station.
The second image was black.
Well, not entirely black, there were spots of grey here and there in the vague shape of a ring. What could this be a picture of?
This just kept getting weirder. It vaguely reminded Jake of some of the horror movies he'd seen. Plus his latent paranoia was starting to kick in, the hair on the back of his neck starting to stand on end just a bit.
Something had happened on this station. Something bad. He snagged a book from the shelf to use as a folder of sorts and carefully slid the pictures into place, after giving the picture of the 'ring' a closer look.
Weird.
Time to check out the couch. Maybe there was something under the cushions. Or underneath it.
The tom looked balefully at him, then licked at its upper lip. And meowed. It was a surprisingly delicate sound, the kind of meow you'd expect to hear from a showroom cat on one of those cat food commercials and not, you know, from a fat tabby on a deep sea station.
The cat had a green collar, but no nametag as far as Jake could see. Also, he was hungry.

It was a fat orange tom that dropped down to the floor and ran under the table.

Jake laughed at himself. A cat. Really? This seemed weirder than usual. He crouched to give the cat a look.
"Well, there's one survivor, anyway."

"What happened down here...? Too bad you can't talk."
Hmmm. Maybe there was some catfood around here somewhere.

Although to be fair, this looked like the kind of cat who'd be complaining even if you'd just fed him like two hours ago.
