A Mini-Midlife Crisis

Oct 02, 2011 23:52

Where to start? He had to resist the urge to pick at the little square bandage on his forehead or the stitches. Daniel put his hands on his hips, where they couldn't get anywhere near his head, and surveyed what was going to temporarily be his domain. Until he got kicked out, at least, but until then, he was determined to squat here. As makeshift ( Read more... )

Vala had debated whether to even come after receiving his Omnicomm message, even the official tone of it had pissed her off. Miss Mal Doran! What was she? One of his old students? A colleague in another department that he only vaguely knew?

But she wasn't even that, she wasn't anything to him, that was the truth of it. A more selfless person than herself might have understood his position and made allowances accordingly, but Vala was anything but selfless.

The science department hadn't been hard to find, she only wished she'd had chance to procure something else to wear other than the creepy figure hugging plant suit. She'd made some adjustments though, the neckline had been slashed down to her cleavage so it didn't cling to her throat, well if she couldn't bring herself to fasten her mission jackets properly, she was hardly going to think twice about modifying thisVala didn't knock, nor did she hover at the doorway waiting for an invitation. In fact she wandered in as if she owned the room, picking up a couple of random ( ... )

He didn't notice he was starting to absently pick at the stitches on his forehead until he heard someone come in. Daniel guiltily dropped his hand. Then he remembered where he was. No Janet. He wasn't about to hear it from her. Straightening up, he looked over ( ... )

Vala wasn't really pissed at him, not really. She wanted to tell herself she was, and she had every right to be, and she had been. But the fact of the matter was those feelings of anger had been pretty much usurped by their friendship. Albeit a friendship he wasn't aware of. But that was why she was here, not to get the device back, she could care less about retrieving a remnant of her time as Qetesh's host ( ... )

Daniel didn't take his seat, instead he stared at her, stunned. It was like Vala had a knack for constantly pulling the rug out from under him all the time. Daniel didn't think he liked it.

Really? She wanted to hear him say every single word? He had a hard time saying sorry to Jack when he had to, and Jack was someone he knew very well! Well sort of. Jack was never all that great at talking about his personal life or his feelings. His idea of an apology was inviting Daniel over for hockey and pizza. That also constituted a normal Friday, so it was hard to tell sometimes when he was apologizing or not.

No wonder she came in without chewing his head off. She wanted to see him grovel instead instead. His pride was taking a massive hit right now, and if it weren't for the fact that he'd been horribly wrong, Daniel wouldn't have bothered. Of course, if he hadn't been so sure he was right, he wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. No one to blame but yourself, and that was the worst part of it ( ... )

"Thank you." Vala nodded smugly as she said it, honestly her emotions ran so hot and cold, she was way beyond it even mattering now, but it was nice to hear him say it anyway. She sprung off the table like a kid that had just got out of class when they were done. Completely in-congruent to the way she'd been acting thus far.

"So, these dallygogs people provided you with a Sarcophagus," the swift pace of subject change was completely out of left field as she searched for the mechanism to open it. "Well that was generous of them. What's their story? Use this and save money on drafting in new recruits when they send the existing ones out to get killed?"

For one second, Daniel wanted nothing more than to wipe the smug look off her face. He knew he was in the wrong. She obviously knew he was in the wrong. But when someone apologized, and they meant it, which Daniel certainty did, you didn't act so infuriating smug. Daniel restrained the poor temper about to come out. He thought seriously for a second about taking back the apology, then had to admit that was just childish. It was like Vala was bringing out the worst in him. Daniel reminded himself again, just because it helped, that he was actually in the wrong this time and walked into it.

"Daligigs," Daniel corrected her impatiently. He had the sinking suspicion that she knew full well what it was and was doing it on purpose. Although he wasn't that much closer to answering who they were either. It also wasn't something he felt like sharing with her. "They didn't provide us with it. We found it on the dig I got back from ( ... )

Her hands shot back in fake surrender. See! Not touching it now Daniel, relax. She shot him a look that said as much.

"I was only going to open it!" she protested. "And I never said it was funny," Vala clarified in all seriousness, clenching her fists to avoid the temptation of touching it again, "nothing about any of this is funny. But if these Daligag really think that I'm risking my life and fighting a war for them that I know nothing about, then they're gravely mistaken. Jaffa slave or Ori soldier, I am not."

Internally she was still puzzling over Daniel, eying him critically. He was definitely younger, of that she was sure now. Her attention was brought back to his stitches given the scrutiny she was paying him, she'd wondered about them since seeing him in the Obs deck, but the opportunity to ask about them hadn't really presented itself.

"Is that where you sustained your injury? At the dig?"

She had the same concerns about fighting someone else's war that he did. He'd seen a number of people instantly ready to fight, no questions asked, and Vala wasn't one of them. Smart woman. Daniel hoped the approval didn't show on his face.

"Well don't open it. Besides, it's jammed, that thing isn't opening all the way." Yes, only going to open. And only going to touch everything in the lab next. Probably break them too. Daniel's mood had soured just a little, but he tried to be patient. "Then don't fight. You don't have to go on the missions. If the ship is attacked again, find somewhere safe to go." That brought up something else he wanted to get into, now that she was done making life difficult over an apology. She knew about the Goa'uld, the Jaffa. The Ori, those he didn't know. He did have a few theories he was mulling over. "What did you do exactly back uh, home ( ... )

"Oh!" Vala was taken aback by that response, her mouth hanging slightly open in naive surprise as she considered it. "See that, I didn't realise. Wouldn't non-participation result in them stuffing us back in the slime pods though?"

It seemed an obvious assumption to make in her opinion, "I mean as far as I can tell resources on board are fairly limited, have you seen the food?! And when they have a perfectly good stasis system in place, surely it makes sense that they'd be a little more selective otherwise they'd risk mutiny. Not that I want to go back in the pods, obviously out here is far more preferable."

The whole deal with Stacy and this war was a lot to take in, but Vala had already done some homework, not to mention keeping abreast of transmissions on the omnicomm. It all just seemed so unlikely, and coming from someone with her experience, that was saying something. If she was to express her thoughts and doubts to anyone though, it was Daniel. He might not know her but she definitely knew him and she trusted him ( ... )

"Yes. I've seen the food. I've only eaten it," he didn't just arrive here. Next she was going to tell him not to run the gauntlet of tentacles, because that was horrible. Already been there, done that, got felt up in the process ( ... )

"Call me crazy, but somehow I don't think alerting the Captain of this delightful colloquially named vessel", no she hadn't been too fond of the tentacles either, but you'd have never guessed by the inappropriate comments she'd uttered to them in a futile attempt to make her feel like she had the upper hand, "to my reluctance to join his band of vigilantes juuust yet, is a very good idea. Conscientious objectors aren't usually dealt with by offering them tea and scones in my experience ( ... )

He almost offered to ask Leon for her but it only took one look at the entire room to see it wasn't a good idea just yet. Maybe once it cleared. In a day or so. They couldn't possible get dumped into another war zone in that time. Vala just had to wait until he was done. Almost done at least, he corrected, but that was relative considering the list of things to do. Almost done, in Daniel's opinion, was about the same as being done. He was up to his neck in work. There was always one more thing to do, one more line to fill in or something to tag. Yeah, he didn't know when "almost done" was going to be. "I guess keep out of trouble for now and try not to get noticed by him," Daniel said absently into his notebook. It couldn't be that hard. He managed it ( ... )

"Oh I passed all the psychiatric assessments, with ease might I add." Which wasn't entirely truthful, the assessment had just reminded her of exactly why she didn't belong at Stargate Command, but the fact remained that by some miracle they'd deemed her suitable, and she'd never been happier.

"Then I was a probationary member for a while. But I more than proved myself on several missions before being made a proper member. Badges and all." The pride in her achievement showed through in her smile. Underneath the sassy sarcastic exterior, Daniel was privy to a brief glimpse of a much softer and more vulnerable woman.

It was a smile that was quickly wiped off her face when she spotted the ribbon device though, she'd been about to pick the object up, obscured at is was where it lay on the table and it wasn't obvious what it was at first glance. She had absolutely no inclination to pick that up though. It was hard to even look at without being reminded of what she had done with it. Vala was caught like a rabbit in headlights ( ... )

Vala knew something about SGC procedure...Or she made an easy guess about how things might run in a military organization. The pride though, he didn't think that was faked. It leaked out, softened the bravado. He didn't think it was just because she got onto the flagship team either. It felt like there was something else. Like she was proud she fit in at all. For one second, he thought they could understand each other, even as strangers. Finally belonging somewhere.

He was just surprised to hear they let her come offworld with the team if she hadn't passed the psych eval first. That couldn't be right. "They really let you go on several missions before becoming a team member?" so he was just a little skeptical ( ... )

Oh why did he always have to be suck a stickler for details? And how did he always manage to see through her and know there was more? Most people would just nod and accept the story they were presented with, but oh no not Daniel. Everything needed validating, it was so irritating. Especially given that she really didn't want to have to get into an entire history of the Ori and exactly why they thought she could prove to be a valuable asset in their fight. Daniel didn't even know about the Prometheus.

"It's all very convoluted Daniel, and forgive me for being blunt but there are so many gaping holes in your experiences that..." Vala wasn't even sure how to progress, or if she even should. She couldn't explain how any of this was even possible.

"Daniel, by my reckoning you're years younger. That's a lot of water over the bridges ( ... )

"Water under the bridge."

Daniel guessed that was Vala-speak for 'Shut up, Daniel. Stop asking so many questions'. Afraid Jack had you beat there, he got it down to one word. There was something to be said about military efficiency. A measured "Daniel", which translated to any number of things, ranging from Daniel, hurry up, to Daniel, whatcha doin'? to a very angry Daniel, shut up. If there was one thing he had a hard time with, it was knowing when to shut up. He still thought it was a valid question. What was the point of the psych eval then if they let you go off world without it, even as a probationary member? It sort of defeated the purpose. And it was a hole in her story. Giving her version of 'it's a long story' only made him want to dig more ( ... )
