I think Christian is very brave. The "macho" factor many latinos place on their boys is very overbearing. Many times you feel forced to conform so not to "embarass" your family. While many parents may not embrace the idea it has been my expierence that "spanish men" are expected to be almost God like. It is too much pressure.

hey mel, thanks for the perspective there. in addition to what you had to say, i'd also add that a lot of folks that don't understand latino culture and are not a part of it use this idea of latino 'machismo' to make latin@/chican@ folks sound more 'naturally' homophobic and stuck to gender roles, when there is nothing natural about either of those things.

you are right! I only ment that I have always noticed growing up how much latino boys were expected to portray this image of "strength, tough, macho, I don't have feelings, I am a man". It is not fair that many latino people expect certain charateristics from their "men". But I guess you are right - it goes beyond that. Many people are homophobic. All in all you know that I feel people are people and we should treat each other how we would want to be treated. I despise the idea of society puts people in categories. I only wanted to share with you what I know of. No disrespect intended. You know I value you in my life. - M

i didn't feel disrespected. and i wasn't disagreeing with anything you said in any way, just adding an additional layer to it (for the benefit of other readers more than anything). sorry if that was not clear.

thanks for the FYI. i was also thinking of eventually switching to blogger once i figure out exactly what i'd want to do with it (I'd want that one to be more serious than my LJ updates right now), but i'm here for now.
