Austin, TX is very artsy and liberal and has a huge burner community. Flipside is held near there every year. Cost of living is much cheaper than the places you mentioned.

How's the architecture community there... ? Any clue. ? The good things about Portland and New York is that they are very forward when it comes to interior design, Portland more so in environmental design.
