It's an anime series based around enormous transforming mecha and the power of a spiral such as a drill - sci-fi conventions be damned, it throws reality out the window for what looks cool and flashy. Heck, even one episode is called "My drill will pierce the heavens" or something similar... I just thought that, logically, that's where you'd have picked up the phrase.
