Second Snowfall

We had the second snowstorm of the season overnight, about 6" of powdery snow over frozen slush in high winds. I'm so grateful that I have the easy option to work from home! I spent the first half of the workday in my pajamas just to declare the moral victory of it. Eventually, comfort took over and I actually donned pants. It's about 30 degrees ( Read more... )

I am of like mind in that I try not to discuss politics. It often just degenerates into a fight and no one's mind is usually changed. It only foments anger and "WTF-is-wrong-with-you!!" between otherwise friendly people.

I adore George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series, though they are filled with death, horror and angst. This is not my usual fare, but the scope of the thing is so epic, and watching so many people change and grow beyond what they began as, is fascinating people-watching. Often, assumptions about the nature of particular individuals, and people in general are blown by character development details that occur as the story flows along.
The deaths are indeed shocking, gut wrenching and horrific. But, there are truly things worse than death, as the old saw goes...

It may not surprise you, but I trust the police as well. I mean, there are always a few bad apples in every profession, but I like to think the bulk of them are there to protect us. Course I grew up in a family where many went into law enforcement - though more FBI than police. But still - same idea.

Love the series too! I remember that the further I got into the series I became outright paranoid about if one of the characters I liked was about to be killed off. ;)

Muhahahahahahaha. You have discovered what many of us found out the hard way: that Martin will kill ANYone in his books. :) Certainly makes it feel more real!

I even gave the books to my mother, who ordinarily prefers light fantasy to heavy epic fantasy like this. She loves 'em. It's weird.

cheers,
Phil

I also have been disappointed to learn that some people I really like have a deep hatred for all police. I think it's too bad for good cops that you hear more stories on the news of their bad counterparts, since a cop doing something stupid usually results in injuries or death. I really think their just a bunch of regular guys doing a tough job to the best of their ability, for the most part.
