Even geekier, this group does not sound as though they should be playing straight out D&D. This sounds like a job for Hackmaster!

On tabletop gaming systems... now don't laugh... don't throw things... I love White Wolf for the ease of use and logic. I'm not saying you should go all WoD or anything, but as far as a system that I think is easy to learn inside-out -- yeah!
