Little Obligation Weekend

Nov 24, 2007 09:39

It's not quite a No Obligation Weekend proper since there is some perceived need to get out of jammies and put on clothes. It's close, though!

We foraged out yesterday in the chilly autumn sunshine to Century Bank to open our new checking accounts. They're running a holiday special, so $50 for Ian for opening his account, $25 for me for referring him. My mom got the same deal a few weeks ago. I got $77 when I opened my account -- so $227 for choosing to go with this bank instead of others is not such bad return! I'm up early today, as usual, and I've transferred all the automatic payments from our NetBank account to Century. I got caught up on filing our bills and financial papers. One thing I got out of reading Smart Couples Finish Rich is how desperately we need a good filing system for our important financial papers. Saying, "Yeah, I've got that somewhere within this five square feet of space in the corner of this room," is a start, but not nearly good enough. For example, I had to spend 10 minutes searching for our insurance policy account numbers this morning when I wanted to call to change our EFT for billing.

We went out to lunch at our fav Mex place, Blue Goose. I've discovered I like tostadas, even though they're messy. They're certainly one step up the healthful chain from cheese enchiladas. We had a fun meandering discussion about investment strategy, stocks we'd like to watch, people (including ourselves) who keep making the same efforts and same mistakes over and over again and expecting something different. It's always good chatter with the sweetie!

Ian fell into a state of boredom in the evening that our friend Pontus once characterized as being particular to being on a long vacation from school, and so bored that you hang upside-down off the back of the couch just for something to do. I know exactly what he means! Ian watched me play Viva Pinata for awhile (and certainly that's scraping the bottom of the barrel of entertainment... although truthfully, I'm telling you, this game is far more interesting than it really has a right to be). We talked about school, and a detailed discussion of his artwork and where he hopes to make improvements. I love that he shares with me so much detail about his work. Eventually we broke down and went out to GameStop for a brief lift in the moratorium on not buying ourselves anything after November 1. While out, we got lost trying to get into and out of a particular parking lot. We saw the shining neon on the dark prairie of a place we lovingly refer to as "The Titty Twister" since it reminds us of the strip joint in the movie, "From Dusk Till Dawn." Turns out there are no titties to be had there, that we're aware of. It's just a family type Mexican restaurant with a "fun" quotient that's running a little high. It's considerably closer to home and our movie theatre than the Blue Goose, so we may try it out tonight.

Anyway, at GameStop, Ian picked up "Crysis," as detailed last night (MEXICAN LLAMA), and I played City of Heroes... succumbing to altaholism and making yet another new character. This time it's an energy-electricity blaster, a pair I haven't tried yet. I like it so far, and got interesting results from a modification on pressing the Random button for my costume. That always brings interesting results!

I read more of Rich Dad, Poor Dad last night. Jury is still out. I admit I'm getting intrigued by the "make your money work for you" bit, but I'm still staring slack-jawed at the pages. The "Rich Dad" voice meanders too much for my liking, and I wish he would speak more plainly. I feel like I'm not Getting It so far, but we shall see. I'm hardly far into it.

It's raining here today, so it'll be a quiet no errands, no great walk to the gym sort of day. I plan on the excitement of some hobbit laundry, playing various video games, and maybe going so far as to rearrange my closet to make my sweaters and winter wear more accessible.
