Dunno about Ira's motivations, but as for Basil... my guess would be it has to do with zir hire. Ira is evidently a notable up and comer, and zir hiring by Six Below looks like it was something of a coup for them (judging by Element's noted interest) - and for Basil especially, since it's likely that the manager also does team hires. Therefore, pushing Ira serves two purposes for Basil: 1) Allows him to get as much as possible out of his latest acquisition (or so he thinks), and 2) Shows to the evidently already dissenting other members of Six Below that he clearly still knows what he's doing because, see, he hired this real winner, see?
