Here is a longish but fascinating article on the use of industrial windmills in 17th and 18th century Europe.

I heard a bit of the story, and saw him on The Daily Show. I imagine it was a diagram like that that got him started. A lot of the "stuff" in that image is support structure - the gearing (the tricky part of turning the axis 90 degrees) is up near the top, and then the lower part is the working machinery. That part changes whether they are making a grinding or sawing machine or whatever.
