Replacing a bumper cover

I don't know about you guys, but my Prius has been victim to some SERIOUS hate-crimes in the 19+ months that I've owned it. I honestly don't know how else to explain it! I've replaced a side view mirror, a windshield, two passenger side windows from a break-in (seriously, they broke two windows and got NOTHING), and my car tags that were stolen ( Read more... )

Oh, dear. Sorry to hear about all your troubles! Unfortunately, I don't have any advice for you, but I'll be interested to see how people respond. I, too, have had mishaps with my Prius. I've been hit WHILE PARKED, or slowly pulling out of a parking spot, THREE TIMES in a little over a year! It's as if I'm driving a "stealthmobile" or something.

In a sense, Prius' (Prii?) are stealth!Mobiles...

they are very quiet... especially when the motor isn't running.

True, but it is not applicable in this case since everyone who hit me was driving in his or her own vehicle so they couldn't...not...hear me if they wanted to. :P So I'm just wondering, is the Prius shape/color some kind of camouflage to people?

Ah! okay.

In that case? I think, unfortunately, it just means the drivers weren't paying attention.

Like the folks who don't care how wide their doors open and ding the doors of the cars to either side of them.

IMO anyway.

My bumper is banged up largely due to the fact that I got front-ended (the guy was backing up and DIDN'T BOTHER LOOKING BEHIND HIM) once, and I hit someone (going 5mph or less, actually) another time.

My side doors are banged up due to either being keyed (I'm not as sure about that) or the people who have parked on either side of me have been careless...

I don't like it and I don't understand why people are so careless about opening their car doors... I try to be as careful as possible...

I'm going to try to look for a place to get the dings out of my doors but I'm not sure how much $$ that will be. (I'm a little afraid to find out)

Your poor car. :( I've been lucky - one door ding (a friend did it, no less), and someone backed into my front bumper about six weeks ago (it was witnessed, I was fetched, and their insurance covered it - $600 to repair the front bumper/re-paint it).

Something I did do when it was new was get a set of side moldings (I can't remember which company, but I paid around this for them). I know this has saved my doors a lot of dings, as they've become a bit marked up.

Wow, I've never had this problem!! Now ... I have an older one (2001) so it may not matter.

It sounds like you are having the experiences of someone who drives a Mercedes!!

Living in the city for two years now, I've had 3 hit and runs while I was parked in front of my apartment, and someone broke into my car two months ago breaking the passenger's side window. After getting my bumper fixed the first two times, when the third time happened, (tail gate backed into my front bumper leaving a square hole in it) I bought a ten dollar bottle of apoxy and some spray paint, and filled in the dent myself. It's not worth it to keep fixing up your bumper when you live in the city and don't have a garage.
