Update from interstate 75

I'm currently at a rest stop taking a break from my long drive back to Georgia.

It's raining there's ice and I'm having panic attacks because of it. I've never driven in ice/snow conditions before and it's scaring the shit out of me.

I keep thinking I'm gonna lose control of the car and die. I've just been brave enough to do 60, anything over and I ( Read more... )

Don't drive faster than what you're comfortable with, even 60 is probably too fast for those conditions.
You can always just wait it out if you're worried. The rest stop is probably a good place to be, a lot better than waiting it out on the side of the road.

In Florida they actually omit all the stuff about driving in icy/snowy conditions from the lessons and written/physical tests.

Said it was because as a Florida driver you'd never need those skills. >.>

The biggest trick to driving in ice and snow is to slow down. If you're going slow enough, you have time to react and the car has time to get back on track. Completely resist making any sudden movements or jerks on the wheel. Slow down to 55 or 50 or less if you have to in order to feel comfortable.

Up here in snowy/icy New England, most accidents are not caused by the initial skid, they're caused by somebody jerking the wheel in the opposite direction of a skid, overcorrecting, and then having an accident.

If you do start to skid, let up on the gas and don't immediately wrench the wheel the opposite way They say to steer into a skid, but it's more like just not trying to immediately steer in the opposite direction.

If it makes you feel any better, I have to drive in ice and snow all the time and I hate it :/

Be super careful man. Coming up my way can be dangerous, we've got more Ice than a Zelda Temple. Half spun out going to work, had to call and tell them it wasn't happening today. I didn't even make it down the first road, the whole thing is ice. And scary. :( Careful dude!
