Any time period or cultural slant in mind?

Not really. Renn Faire stuff - could be historical, could be fantastical. Nothing involving tights. I have some accessories such as a black belt and my old boots and such. I even have a black cowl I think, with a huge enveloping hood.

I always figured the Renaissance-Reformation scholar look would fit you well… something with a wide floppy hat, and long sleeves slitted half-way down (before the era of white Elizabethan ruffles around the neck). Examples: Erasmus of Rotterdam, Thomas More, and almost everyone else painted by Hans Holbein the Younger.

It's definitely a winter costume; I'm not sure what a summer-weight version would look like. Maybe this guy in his early years.

For a more budget-conscious take on Kevin's suggestion, you could do a somewhat-well-off scribe or poet. That wouldn't take much more than a tunic, hat and pants, and some pretty simple props.

I'd gladly whip up a nifty leather over-the-shoulder parchment-quill-and-ink case for you.

Kevin, I like the look of some of some of your suggestions, but as you pointed out they are largely 'winter' costumes, and this would be for summer faire goings mostly. But I would want something that I could modify it if something else came up.

Daniel, hmm, that's an interesting idea. I think I might just take you up on that offer. A well-to-do scribe type theme sounds like it might be a good direction to explore. If I see you online tonight we can chat about it (assuming I'm not picking you off of some barricade somewhere *headshot*)

I should have clarified better; I have someone willing to do the sewing (at least as far as the fabric part of the costuming goes) - I was just looking for a good costume 'look' for me to go with. Like, 'knight in armor' or 'Italian merchant' - that kind of thing.

I was scanning Renn Faire costuming websites and just wasn't finding anything really inspiring that I could steal as a design theme.

Looking for a Look

I've found that looking at fantasy art is a helpful base for costuming. Most of the outfits I've made for LARPing started with costumes I saw from mmo's or tabletop art. Ragnorok online, Pathfinder, Runes of Magic, Guild Wars... Once you find a look, you can start figuring out what basic garment patterns are needed to build the look.
