Background
Evo!canon states that she was adopted by Mystique when she was four. She doesn't know what happened to her birth parents. She has a few memories of her birth father... and they aren't very good ones. Whatever happened to him that led to Mystique adopting her isn't something she feels particularly sorry about.
She lived with her 'Mama' as Anna Marie Raven until the age of 12. They were very happy years. Her mama traveled a lot, but she always made up for it when she got back, and there was a very nice elderly couple who would let her stay overnight if she would help around the house. They had a bowl full of peppermints, and Rogue made it her business to sneak off one whenever she passed by. To this day, she remembers them whenever she has a peppermint.
As a child, her Mama enrolled her in all kinds of classes, from gymnastics to martial arts to gun safety... and piano and Pioneer Club. Even when her mama was busy, she'd do her best to make time for the various recitals.
Everything changed when Rogue turned 12. First, her mama got a different job, one that required even more traveling, so her mama arranged for her to go and live with an old friend, and even had legal guardianship transferred. Her 'Aunt Irene' was blind, and Rogue's mama charged her to take very good care of her, especially in lazy Caldecott County, where 'progressive' was thought to be a way of crossing the street. With her unusual white streak, and living with one of the town's only disabled people (and a relative newcomer at that), having a 'hard time fitting in' was putting it mildly.
Then things got worse. Only a few months after moving in with Irene, Rogue was diagnosed with a 'skin condition,' one which dictated that she had to cover herself from head to foot, and that she could allow no one to touch her for her own safety. This further isolated her from her peers and she became withdrawn, discarding her old name, 'Anna Marie,' and making everyone begin to call her Rogue. Still, her appearance and her attitude hardly let her fade into the background, and as high school went up and down in the social scene, Rogue grew more and more fed up with the hypocrisy and began to do her best to live up to her name. 'Going Goth' was just one way of doing that (don't ask her about the time she jury-rigged a particular classmate's daddy's brand new BMW and took it for a test drive on the backroads).
And at least once she started slapping on the make-up, people stopped asking her about her hair.
Habits
Rogue is a bit of a neat freak. When she sets something down, she always sets it down in the same exact place, and everything has a place. This is both the result of her seeking to establish some form of control in her life and of those formative years growing up with a blind 'parent,' Destiny.
Gloves
She's got a few different kinds from knit gloves to spandex, but her current preference is leather gloves. She's gotten quite good at cutting off the fingers at the edges and stitching them so that they rest exactly at the edge of her fingertip.
She doesn't like getting her gloves dirty, so she's careful with them when she goes out - if she eats finger food when she's out she's careful to make sure that it's not greasy or sticky.
She goes through phases where she paints her nails, even though no one will see. She also wears two rings on one hand (thumb, ring finger). She makes sure to take them off before going into combat.
The Name 'Rogue'
Rogue was thirteen when she picked the name, a year after Irene told her that she had an 'incurable skin disease' and that she had to start dressing like this. She'd been Anna Marie before that, a name kept sacred and locked away and Anna Marie had been sick and tired of being unable to be what everyone thought she should be. Normal. A good girl. Able to touch.
Rogue was someone who struck out on their own. Rogue was someone that the bullies and name-callers and pitying looks couldn't touch. Rogue was someone who picked her own path and knocked down anyone who got in her way.
She hadn't known how true her name was until years later, at a dance, when her powers had activated with a fateful touch. Some skin disease.
Now she guards her name as part of her identity, as part of her true self that she remembers and that no psyche can take away from her, as much as she holds onto 'Rogue,' and makes her name a warning and a promise.
