my eye burns!

Today in short: My eye burns, I've slept about half the day and I intend to sleep some more once my benadryl kicks in, I've been queerly ravenously hungry, and I need a massage. And some spirulina. And some yogurt. What's a good brand of kombucha tea to get ( Read more... )

Hey! I just finished reading a book I got at a garage sale called "The Tightwad Gazette". It has truly convinced me that prepackaged foods are terribly more expensive than baking from scratch, and it's also given me many, many tips on saving that I never thought of. It's not one of those books you read while thinking, "I knew that already." Sure, there's some stuff like that, but the majority is new to me.

It's about 15 years old, so the concept of sending letters instead of calling long distance to save money has been eliminated by email, but the vast majority of this stuff still applies.

I have reserved book II from the library, but they also have the original. I highly recommend it -- especially since you'll be going to CA, where penny-pinching will be a necessity.

could I borrow it from you? I'll give it back before I leave. I'm blacklisted at the library (it's a looong story)...

something I had to learn the hard way (and this when I was in grad school trying to live on next to nothing):

taking care of your health is NOT a luxury.

there all kinds of stuff you can make with rice and vegetable and beans that is both cheap and really, really good for you. Not exciting, but you'll feel good, your teeth will be in better shape, and your overall health will be better in the long run.

Definitely look at the Tightwad Gazette that was already suggested. There's also one called the Hillbilly Housewife or some such thng that you can find online that has some useful suggestions.

Believe me, you'll thank yourself later if you take care of yourself now.
