Reading this, I have come to the conclusion that since these characters had very screwed up lives before the series, the whole vampire/werewolf/witch thing was hardly necessary. (Of course, yeah, that was rather the point, but you know what I mean.)

I love the whole story, I don't even know where to begin. John attempting to be the head of the family, Matt being all sweet and protective, Tyler instinctively being there for her by both avoiding bridges and his 'that fucking sucks', the beginning of Jeremy's descent into drugs, all six of them being there for each other. It's just perfectly tragic and I love it.

I have a desperate need to see what they were like before the series started, before Elena's parents died, because it sounds like almost all of them were completely different people and it was the Gilberts' deaths which set them on the path to who they are now.
