The summer they are fourteen, Bonnie spends the summer with her aunt in South Carolina, providing Caroline with Elena's undivided attention for the first time in her life.

She and Elena start spending all of their time together, spending 5 nights a week sleeping over at each other's houses. For the first time ever, Caroline feels like she belongs somewhere, like she is someone's best friend. Even when they are not together, they are calling or texting the other. Dr. Gilbert starts calling them "his girls," and it makes Caroline warm; she starts to imagine what it's going to be like when Bonnie returns to find her position as best friend usurped
