082. The Man Who Will Never Say Thanks - Part One

He has spent almost two centuries alone. People tended to forget that, assuming that his life was an endless parade of tormenting Stefan and bedding women, but it wasn't nearly so fun. Eternity had mostly been spent drinking himself into oblivion and lashing out irrationally when reality reminded him of all he had lost, of all he would never have.

When Stefan gives himself to Klaus in order to save his life, Damon is overwhelmingly angry; he was ready to die, deserved to die, and Stefan had traded the life he had fought to build for himself for Damon, who had nothing but his unrequited love to keep him warm.

Damon is absolutely alone now. He would end it all if he didn't feel as if he owed it to Stefan to try to make something of his pitiful life.

Damon thinks maybe he can have a life with Elena now. It is disloyal, he knows, but she kissed him so she feels something. He needs to be a better man, actually wants to be a better man now, and so he begins to imitate what he has seen Stefan do over the years. Elena recognizes it,

He leaves Mystic Falls that night, stays away for years. Damon goes to the ends of the earth to try to forget Elena and Alaric, to forget how much everything hurts. After five years, he stops into a cafe in Spain and is stunned to find Caroline at a table, her blonde hair cut into a trendy bob; she smiles at him and he finds himself realizing he missed her, missed her ridiculously bubbly personality. He asks her what she's doing there, and she explains she is leaving in a few hours to return to Virginia for a wedding

I love that they are and will always be there for Damon. I love Damon, and I love how these two love Damon. They know how terrible and cruel he can be, but it's there and they love him even if they shouldn't. They are much like Stefan in that way.

I love the whole dynamic of the three of them (in case you can't tell) and I firmly petition for Elena to join Team Bad Ass next season.
