The roar of the storm wakes Elena from a dead sleep, the crack of lightning, the ensuing silence, and then the explosion of thunder. Elena sits up in bed, rubbing at her eyes, and glimpses the neon numbers of the alarm clock announcing it is two in the morning. She turns towards the other side of the bed only to find it empty, and immediately Elena knows where her husband is.

She pads down the darkened hallway to find the door to her old bedroom cracked open and the gentle rumble of Alaric's baritone reciting what Elena knows to be the closing lines of The Velveteen Rabbit. Elena pauses in the doorway, resting her head against the frame, watching as Alaric reads by the light of the Tigger lamp on the nightstand, their four-year-old daughter's eyes closing as Alaric finished the book ( ... )
