there isn't much of anything in des moines. We went to ADVENTURELAND, which answers the question "is there a crappier regional theme park in the midwest than Frontier City?" with a resounding YES, GOD YES. It's kind of endearing, really. The roller coasters were ok, but they didn't seem to have been well maintained in the 40 years since they were ( Read more... )

That. Drive. Is. Awesome. bomb_soda June 16 2005, 01:21:45 UTC
Did you drive there? Are you still in the coma induced by the drive through Kansas? Driving through Iowa was snoozeville too, and the only respite between those places is Kansas City, which isn't too great if you just visit for the traffic.

I once visited Des Moines on a Greyhound. I placed a freaky call to one of my uncles who quite possibly didn't remember me, fished some butts out of some ashtrays, and enjoyed a cup of molten-hot chicken broth before getting back on the bus. Happy Thanksgiving to me!

yeah, we've been driving. it's pretty for the first half hour, and then it's all diminishing returns from then on. KC is ok, kind of like OKC but a little more ghetto. It sounds like you did more in Des Moines than we did. That reminds me of this taxi driver I had in richmond who asked me what I did over thanksgiving, and then told me that he had been diagnosed with cancer the day before and then spent thanksgiving alone at western sizzler. I'll never think of western sizzler the same way again.

I'm pretty sure it's not a better place to live than to visit.

You're getting closer. What's your ETA?

I lived in a suburb in Iowa (Coralville) when I was three and four. Basically, all I remember is some depressing landscape around my parents' apartment, a freaky daycare, and a combination Mexican/Irish restaurant called Juan O'Malley's. (it was the only Mexican place in town at the time). glad to hear I didn't miss much...

well, except for the chain snapping at adventureland, of course.
