Once upon a time when I lived in Pittsburgh, I drove to Cincinnati for a week to teach classes. Friday afternoon, the students made me end class early because the NCAA Basketball Tourney was on and their team was in it. It was a cold, snowy day in Ohio, so I went out to the car, turned it on, blasted the heat and went back inside. Yup, I locked the keys in a running car. fortunately they were all there at the office in the back room watching basketball. I called AAA and while we waited (they estimated 2 hours because of the weather) some of the guys rummaged up various pieces of metal and tried to break into the car for me. They failed. Eventually AAA arrived and in the end I didn't leave until 5:00pm anyway. So much for getting home to Tom and Tribble early that day!

Anyway, been there, done that, it sucks but you're not the only idiot in the room. :-)

Thanks! I'm sure it must be a common thing. And I have locked my keys in the car before, at least 3 other times in my life, but never running, and the other times it was easier to find help. One time, with my Neon, I was at work, and the window was open just a crack, but enough for someone to get his golf club handle (he was on his way to play after work) in there and unlock it with that.

"Luckily the local police will come open it if there is a child in there."

Yes, I learned that today when I called. Looking back, calling work was the better option and I should have done that first, rather than tie up 911 for something stupid. But then again, my initial plan was to smash the glass of my back door, so obviously my thinking wasn't totally rational at that point.

Oh, that would definitely suck! I did get locked out of an apartment once, but at least I was fully clothed. I had noticed the key was getting harder to turn in my lock, and when I told the management, they basically blew me off. One night I came home, put my key in the lock and it snapped in two, with part of it stuck in the lock. That was a whole other story, also involving neighbor/strangers, not knowing who to call, etc.

EK has twice- TWICE- locked himself out of the house (and the car, though the car wasn't running) so that I had to take a bus home from work to let him in the house to get his keys. At least you didn't inconvenience anyone else.

Well, the main reason I never called Frank in all this is for the brilliant fact that I don't know cell or work number. It's in my phone. Which was...in the car. Plus, he works over 45 minutes away, so it would have been the same amount of wait time as AAA, and he would have had to turn around and go back, taking up almost 2 hours of his day. And finally...I am not certain of the location of my spare car key, or if it is even in my possession. So, even if Frank had come I could have gotten into the house, but might still have needed AAA to get into the car.

I've done that. Car was covered in snow when it happened. By the time the locksmith came, it wasn't anymore.

Effin' COLD out.

I guess one of the reasons I feel so dumb is that this ice that I got out to scrape was, like, so minimal. I probably could have just sat in the car for 3 minutes listening to the radio and it would have melted, and the whole situation wouldn't have happened.
