There's such a lot of pain in Cody and Mr. Ryder as they try to address what has happened. I'm sure you've covered it in the other chapters, but what is nice here is that that history is laid out naturally, in their comments and responses, so that Mr. Ryder in particular is made aware of what this estrangement has cost Nick and Cody.

No harm at all -- the chapter stands by itself. And it's always both exciting and frustrating when a chapter or a story insists on being written willy-nilly, your plans for it be damned. :)

Oh, yeah. Daddy Ryder's visit is dredging up a lot of old hurt, huh? And not just for Nick. In fact, I love the fact that a lot of this plays out between Mr Ryder and Cody.
I love my wife, but she's wrong about this. I just want my son to be happy. As long as he's happy, and healthy, and safe, then nothing else matters. Not even what his mother says.
Wow, I did not expect that. I'm starting to wonder why I automatically expect the dad to be against the relationship. It's not like prejudice is a male prerogative.
I definitely like the ending. It's not perfect - it looks like Nick's mother probably won't ever change her mind - but at least he's got his father back.
