Undertale Screencappery! Part 1
Hey! So I'm considerably new to Livejournal and I'm mostly here because I've always wanted to do a screencap adventure and after reading through a few on here, I quickly realised that LJ was probably one of the easiest places to do one. GREAT!
I'm starting with Undertale as I've got a new(ish) laptop as my old one was a piece of rubbish and was dying a slow death, and because of that thought AH I CAN REPLAY IT FROM THE BEGINNING AWESOME. I would be surprised if you haven't heard of Undertale before as it literally exploded in some sort of Homestuck-level kind of insanity. I feel like a lot of people are put off from Undertale because of the fans, but it really is a great game. While I don't feel like it will be one of those games that stick with you after years and years and years, it is just all around decent and everything about it is pretty neat. The characters, the story, the way it deals with classic RPG tropes (must kill everything in the area! oh wait no I can just hug this monster instead) are all done really nicely.
The music is also brilliant. I love the music so much in this game.
As a QUICK HEADS UP though, this will include MAJOR SPOILERS and I wouldn't read through this if you haven't played through at least once before as I will probably be referencing a few post-game bits. I will try and put up spoiler warnings though for major parts, so even if you haven't played before, hopefully I won't ruin too much for you early on, haha. Seeing as Undertale isn't a new game though, I'm kind of assuming that most people have either played through it before, or at least watched some sort of "Let's Play Undertale" on Youtube.
I mean I watched the Genocide ending that way, because lol I'm never doing that route ever. If you're coming here for a Genocide playthrough you are gonna be disappointed~
getting ff7 flashbacks all of a sudden. will we get human/monster babies like terra?? I kind of wish we did.

As you can see I was a bit of a doof with the screen shots and ended up having little flashes come up to the side like HERES A PREVIEW OF THAT SCREENSHOT YOU JUST TOOK don't worry I ended up realising how to get rid of it
none of this is ever explained much. like why is our little protag out on their own in the mountains anyway? do they have
any family? any relatives? we'll never know OR WILL WE? i might have just missed it at some point on why the MC is just
scampering around the wildness.

ok you CAN do this, but you'll get a "hidden ending" and well basically I don't have time for that nonsense. If you want to see what the difference is on the ending in HARD MODE then here you go! You might want to skip ahead to 1:03, as before then is just the dialogue with Toriel.

I also like as well that our gender is ambiguous - I had assumed that I was a girl in my whole playthrough, not that it was ever stated, but it was only afterwards when I saw some fan videos and art where the MC was portrayed as a boy it kind of hit me as pretty neat that you could be either. It's just nice that the protag's gender was pretty unimportant to the story as a whole, as with so many RPGs you had to know the main protags gender just so we can have love interests and what not.
It doesn't matter here though as we will flirt with anything/anyone

but really your weapon isn't all that important unless you want to go genocide route. I felt bad just watching the genocide route, so I wouldn't be able to do it for real. I get way too attatched to fictional characters

This kind of reminds me a little of FF tutorial screens where they have a black screen and then a chocobo or a moogle run on like HEY LET ME EXPLAIN THINGS.
fun fact about Flowey, first playthough you do he introduces himself as Flowey the Flower and is like omg you mustve woken up here so scared and confused and is like I'll be your friend and help you out! :D Pretty standard introductory mascot.
But anyway, when I played through this on my new laptop, I had to do some more updates so I closed after the tutorial and came back to it. Second time Flowey says something along the lines of "Hi I'm Flowey, but don't bother looking all surprised, we both know you've been here before" which was just so passive aggressive and then this is all he says after that.
It's just the :D face with this line that makes it. So passive aggressive Flowey!
Also additional fun fact - the "Don't you have anything better to do?" line is used again in the 'hard mode' ending. Ha ha ha. I enjoy callbacks like that
I also enjoy the way Undertale does fights, its pretty cool. Way better than the usual fare.

flowey just pauses here a minute like : )
all throughout there was flowey's little upbeat tune playing but every time you miss the pellets (bullets) it gets more and more distorted until you get to this point and the music just stops.
this one is actually a piano tutorial, but it captures the distorted parts really well. I would skip to around 0:30
yeah flowey is totally going to be a cute loveable mascot right?? oh
here its still quiet except flowey now has this scratchy kind of noise when he talks and creeper font
I missed it here but he says Die. in like a ridiculously large font. But not in caps, which makes me think while he's saying this really loudly, he's not shouting and I'm just imagining him saying this in a really monotomous way.

Toriel is really great. I love Toriel. I think everyone does. I don't know how you can NOT love Toriel? It just genuinely don't think its possible.

if the monsters and humans fought above ground and then the monsters got banished here, surely they wouldn't even HAVE ruins here, wouldn't everything still be fairly new below ground?

hahaha ive played for so long on this and ive hardly done the intro yet
literally i spent so long trying to sort out my steam screenshots which I couldn't get to work and then with that and reloading a few times, it really racked up the time

MC is standard mute protagonist though. We never see them talk, but we know that they do. Does Toriel ever find out what my name is? I'm NOT SURE
also HERE is the music for the ruins! I really like this one. It's kind of upbeat and relaxed, but still with that kind of dungeony feel?. i really like the piano intro with it as well. Feel free to take a listen to it while reading along, I'll most likely be putting up the extended versions from now on.

reminds me of this weird childrens book we had when i was younger about this dude who had to choose to a road out of three different ones and one of them had bees or something in, idk but I felt like the moral of the story was ALWAYS CHOOSE THE MIDDLE ROAD
the moral mightve been "be nice to people" or something and then they'll help you not die but really whenver i do games or read books or watch a film or whatever, its always the middle road that's the correct answer
but yeah i really went off onto a tangent there

MC is just in a constant state of "..." throughout the whole thing, so you never know what theyre thinking. Which works especially well depending how you play the game. : )

I like that the "do we...?" has the elipsis there, because its a bit hesitant, as if Toriel isn't quite sure about us yet. It's a nice little detail. Because at this point, it's still uncertain what route we're is going to go down.
BUT ANYWAY ENOUGH OF THAT, LETS RELOAD

And seeing this after I've done the fight one, it almost sounds like she is relieved here. But it can also be read as just a mum encouraging her child, because that's essentially what Toriel is. I still can't remember if our family are ever mention or what

I like that the "do we...?" has the elipsis there, because its a bit hesitant, as if Toriel isn't quite sure about us yet. It's a nice little detail. Because at this point, it's still uncertain what route we're is going to go down.

I liked this test, because nothing was ever going to happen to us, but it was just about how we would deal with being on our own and not having any support in a sudden situation, but without any actual danger.
