We went on an overnight trekking trip to the mountains yesterday very early in the morning and came back a couple of hours ago very happy but also very tired, wet (except the kid, we managed to keep him dry) and very very hungry

I bet he was miserable and cranky before he got fed though.
Mind you I do agree that we here in the west tend to eat based on emotion rather then actual hunger. It's actually a pretty big problem here. Also we eat way way way too much sugar.
He is actually never cranky. he gets so busy running around that he doesn't notice the hunger. Until we sit him down and put food in front of him that is.
When your body has worked hard... it doesn't WANT fast food or crap food... it wants REAL food, fresh food!
I still remember a crazy strenuous hike. My friend was like, "Its just four miles up there.. we'll be up and back in a few hours. EASY!"
He didn't mention that the last 3 miles are all uphill switchbacks and the last mile is so steep you are bear-walking the whole time! When we all got to the summit, half of us swam in the glacial lake at the top of the mountain... and drank what water we brought.
Everyone was like, "I am SO hungry! I cannot believe we didn't bring snacks!" Sailor, being perfect in every way produced 3 pears and 3 oranges. Everyone got a piece of fruit, and we each DEVOURED our respective fruits... practically pith, stem, seeds, peel, core and all. We were all so satisfied, and re-energized and re-invigorated by such a SIMPLE treat. Our bodies were CRAZY for what a piece of fruit could offer us...we each WORSHIPED our bit of fruit!
It is easy to forget that fresh food.... mind-blowingly amazing. Processed food can't compare... scientifically-delicious well-calculated and chemically enhanced for consumption stands no chance against a handful of fresh berries you just picked on a hike!
