Maybe I don't understand the racism, because I am not from the USA but from Europe. I guess the headband is just a stereotype. Nothing wrong with that?
You think of Holland and you think of clogs, windmills, tulips, red light district and legal drugs. That's also not what our country is about. Just stereotypes.
I don't understand why people get mad at a stereotype. However, maybe this is because in Holland we don't have the racism that you know in the States.
Just my two cents :)

there really isn't racism... I don't understand. It's only people saying "omg that is so racist" that makes us seem like race is such an issue. It's not. Make it on nonissue. If you want to ignore race, fucking ignore it. It's that simple. Race is but a small fraction of a person. It's all this hyper-PC b.s. that's making it out to be worse that it is. Yeah, racism still exists, but most Americans hardly care about race anymore.

You are completely delusional if you think race doesn't matter to "most" Americans. People make assumptions and generalizations based on a person's race ALL. THE. TIME. It's just so ingrained into our culture that we hardly notice it. Hell, I've caught myself making assumptions and have to stop and think it through. So don't say that, because it's patently untrue.

uh seriously? It's the same if we're talking about people with hair color, body type, age, sex, sexual preference.. whatever the case may be. It's in our nature to make "assumptions" based on how someone looks or acts. Heck, we do it to animals too. Most Americans aren't racist and I will stand by that fact.

I appreciate the whole, er, concept of cultural appropriation (and seen the head dress website) but to be honest, I'm not sure how this is it? I mean, I'm no expert, and British, but these head-band things don't look like they're referencing traditional Native American costumes ( ... )

I am very anti-fur and I would honestly rather lose a job than help to market something that was yielded by shoving electrodes up an animal's anus. I understand that the allure of fame, fortune and success makes it easy for a lot of people to set aside their beliefs but I just would feel like I lost my sense of self if I did that.

Ok, so I think I did speak too soon, and your comment sort of... made me realise that it's stupid to make blanket statements about choices you'll never have to make. Your comment about losing a sense of self really struck me. HELLO EMOTIONAL MOMENT ON TOPMODEL DISCUSSION LIVEJOURNAL GROUP. Maybe I shouldn't have used myself as an example because I'd probably do the same as you. Or agree to do it and then cry and embarass myself. I'm really glad I'm five foot five right now.

I guess what I meant is that the nature of modelling means that to a large extent, I wouldn't hold models responsible for mistakes made by the companies they work for.

Although, Galliano apologists, ew.

A person should never sacrifice their beliefs for success.

You know, all this "Y'ALL PULLING THE RACE CARD" protestations wouldn't be so bad if:

1) Native Americans don't suffer from 25% poverty (the highest in minority groups).
2) Native Americans as a group suffer from extremely high unemployment.

Because the symbols of imperialism and racism mean a lot when these very symbols are used in a culture in which Native Americans are oppressed.

And some people are just rude. I think people are right and people are wrong on both sides of this whole debate but people who make a big show of not caring are being a bit insensitive for the sake of it. At the same time, some of the links posted on this page show blogs of people screeching THAT'S FUCKING RACIST and YOU WIN ASSHOLE OF THE YEAR YOU OPPRESSIVE BITCH which is, oh, a totally sensitive and nuanced cultural approach.

I'm sorry, on this I'd rather side with people who are rude than people who are defending their ignorance of oppression.
