Kind of getting sociological here...

I've been noticing for a while in ANTM (and Make Me a Supermodel, too, and, I assume, other reality shows) that contestants will often say that they really, want to win just so bad, with the undercurrent of "I deserve to win because I want it so bad." Even despite actual performance, so many contestants seem to ( Read more... )

I think it's the Gen Y factor. It's not that all Gen Y people are like that, but it's really popped up as an ick factor for that age range, imo.

that's how i feel too; gen y is a generation of over-confident underperformers. the sense of entitlement gen y feels it deserves is absurd (i'm gen y, but born in the 80s gen y)!

I think we're being called "Millennials" now. :) The XYZ stuff is old news.

Our generation as a whole grew up with the whole entitlement thing, but I think this recession is going to fix a lot of that mentality.

all i am calling for is self-awareness. it really just improves everything. but self-awareness is something that one works on and is less predicated on external influences. but become self-aware puts so so so much into perspective. the recession might be a good kick on the butt, though.

I've noticed it a little bit on Canada's Next Top Model. Haven't seen the other Next Top Model shows to judge. But I DO think that it's reinforced a bit more in ANTM, with the way Tyra has eliminated or put in the Bottom Two girls that didn't seem to want it.

But if you don't really want it, then there would be nothing pushing you to succeed in the real world. I think that Jaslene probably wouldn't have done quite as well post-show if she wasn't as determined and driven as she was.

yeah I've noticed that too about models with natural ability . Some of the best girls didn't have a million confessionals saying "I'd do anything for this!!!!!!111" and no one questioned them on it because they were so good...like Heather from cycle 9 or Elyse from cycle 1.

One of my fav ANTM qoutes was from Cycle 1 where Elyse said its not a basic human right to win a modeling contract. That always pops out in my head when I hear a ANTM contestant or any reality show contestant claim they "deserve" to win.
