I imagined she meant "she's always fighting for the rights of colored women, yet here she is discriminating against a woman for something else." IE, she should be accepting of all women's choices.
That's just my interpretation of the OP's post, at any rate. If that is in fact what she meant, then I completely disagree about drawing comparisons between discrimination based on race and "discrimination" based on political agenda.
Ooh, addendum: I was paraphrasing the OP and used the word "colored" because that's the language she used... in my own words I'd have said "women of color." But I should have been more careful of that.
i don't think tyra meant anarchy in it's true sense. mostly she just meant that all of jael's pictures were rebelious and that's cool and all except no one is going to hire you if you are going to go against what they want.
That what I got too. Like, there are some shoots that have that edge, where the model almost seems to turn their nose up at whatever they're modeling. Other shoots are softer, mellower, meant to sell not so hard assed.
I think Tyra's words may have been a bit off. I think had she said "hard" or "edgy/angry" no one would have had a problem.
I thought that was the stupidest thing Tyra has ever said. For one thing, unless there were discussions we missed, there was no evidence that Jael was into any sort of specific movements, let alone the anarchist movement. Jael just seemed like she wanted to hug everyone and play with bunnies; not very activist. Plus the whole "you looked like an anarchist making fun of Covergirl" line seemed kind of absurd and equally unfounded. Jael was just uncomfortable, not mocking anything. It was just totally uninformed, and I know it's not a HUGE deal but it seemed like something someone would have wanted to be sure of before hurling the word around.
Didn't that photoshoot involve specifically choosing terms that represented Jael's personality? It was entirely model-driven. (Which explains why most of the terms sucked/overlapped.)
Oh you know, I was thinking of the episode where Jael was eliminated due to her poor CG commercial. I can't remember if she used it for one of her four self-portraits, but if she did then I agree with the person below me - Jael AND Tyra would have both misused the term.
The problem is that the word "anarchist" has somehow become a new thesaurus word for people who want another way to say "rebellious" or "different" or "hardcore." In my opinion both Jael and Tyra were guilty of misusing the word during that cycle.
to anyone not schooled in what it means to be an anarchist, anarchist = hard, militant, tough, punky. I think what she meant was, soften up...stop looking so hard and intense all the time...lighten up, look more human. She's didn't mean, stop looking like an anarchist because anarchist are bad people.
Why would you expect more from Tyra?
It is the job of anarchists, not former models and fluffy talk show hosts, to get out the correct information about anarchism and fight incorrect stereotypes. So if misunderstandings about what it means to be an anarchist abound, blame the anarchists--not tyra or anyone else who just doesn't get it.
1. a person who advocates or believes in anarchy or anarchism. 2. a person who seeks to overturn by violence all constituted forms and institutions of society and government, with no purpose of establishing any other system of order in the place of that destroyed. 3. a person who promotes disorder or excites revolt against any established rule, law, or custom.
That the term "anarchist" has a specific meaning--what you wrote above.
But that to people who don't really understand the real political definition, "anarchist" has become synonymous with someone who is punky, militant, hard.
The word has in popular culture come to signify something very different than its true meaning.
So I was saying that to explain that Tyra most likely has NO IDEA of the nuances of the definition of the word anarchist. And I am guessing Jael doesn't either.
