I am taking a mental inventory of the past three seasons of Heroes to see if there was a precedence set for magical items.

I mean, seriously...magical compasses? Magical ink?

I'm still very confused about the ink. At first I thought it was the blonde chick who could manipulate it. Then the Avalanche dude. But it seems weird to have him double up on powers. Plus the whole compass thing just confuses me. As far as I can tell, there's no precedence for magical items. The company hasn't even been able to produce anything like it. I think Mohindir got as far as being able to isolate the gene that causes the mutation, but he never did more than that.

I was also confused at first, but Samuel has terrakinesis as his power.

The ink he uses is mineral based which allows him to have control over it using terrakinesis. As such, the ink isn't a special power in and of itself. Hope that explains it for ya. XD

I'm more confused at the extreme product placement. They've been doing that for ages, but it's really obvious now.

I think the Nissan Versa in the first season was probably the most obvious. All the random SPRINT logos floating around are fun, though.
