c) isn't this the point of things like this, to turn up and explore, and as well as seeing the stuff you already know and like, sometimes be pleasantly surprised?

Absolutely. I'm actually really looking forward to going to Glastonbury this year without any particular acts in mind as must see because I tend to find that the must see stuff ends up risking being disappointing (c.f. Killers, last year) whereas the stuff that I see unexpectedly turns out to be great.
