"Because I could not stop for death" (Challenge 115: Poetry) drabble + Poem

Apr 08, 2009 16:50

Ianto picked up the poetry book from Jack’s desk. A poem seemed to be marked with a dot from Jack’s pen, Because I could not stop for death by Emily Dickinson. He read it quietly to himself before two arms swarmed around his waist. Ianto found a smile creep upon his face but he kept reading.

“Ah you’re reading Dickinson,” Jack observed, “I used to read that poem everyday until five years ago.”

“Have you ever wanted to stop for death?” Ianto asked curiously.

“I did once but not anymore,”

“What changed?”

“I found a reason to live,” Jack replied

Here is the Poem that the drabble is about

Because I could not Stop For Death

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

Because I could not stop for Death-
He kindly stopped for me-
The Carriage held but just Ourselves-
And Immortality.

We slowly drove-He knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility-

We passed the School, where Children strove
At recess-in the ring-
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain-
We passed the Setting Sun-

Or rather-He passed Us-
The Dews drew quivering and chill-
For only Gossamer, my Gown-
My Tippet-only Tulle-

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground-
The Roof was scarcely visible-
The Cornice-in the Ground-

Since then-'tis centuries- and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity-
