Chapter Fourteen

James

It was quiet when I opened the door of the apartment. Martha had told me to go home and stay there until she had spoken to Jack. She had been supportive when I told her about what had happened between me and Emmett. I still felt terrible about what had happened and I really wanted to show him that it was fine to love another man. I just wasn’t sure if he would let me.

“Hello, um do you want breakfast?” A voice asked. I looked up and saw Emmett standing at the entrance to the kitchen, in only his trousers. Without warning I walked over and pulled him into a hug. His skin felt warm underneath my hands.

“I’m so sorry,” I replied before I felt his lips upon mine. It quickly deepened as I felt his tongue slide in causing a slight tremor down my spine. He pulled back.

“I should be the one who’s sorry,” Emmett replied with a smile, “I made you depressed, like you said you have bipolar and was on a high.”

“Emmett, you didn’t make me depressed,” I told him, trying to convince myself, “You come from an era where male homosexuality is frowned upon, I respect that,” I went on, “I can live with it.”

Emmett nodded but I knew that both of us didn’t believe that lie. Still he smiled and entwined his fingers into my own. I looked into his eyes and found myself smiling back.

“I kissed you because I wanted to,” He confessed a little while later. “I love you but....”

“It’s ok, I understand,” I replied, still smiling. “If a hot half naked man offers me breakfast then I should say yes right?”

“Of course, you should take a shower,” He replied wrapping his arms around me, “While I prepare the eggs on toast.”

“Maybe you could shower with me,” I replied rather cheekily before he kissed me again, this time softly. He pulled back and smiled.

“That’s a good offer but I have to decline,” He replied with a smile, “I’ve already had one.”

“That’s alright,” I replied rather disappointed, “I’ll just leave you to make breakfast.”

“James, Martha kinda told me what you were doing the past week,” Emmett said as he let me go, “I was worried and I wanted to know the truth....” He added before faltering.

I nodded and left the kitchen with a smile on my face.

Martha

The hub was quite when I entered the cog door with a paper bag full of scones and other pastries. I told James that I was going to talk to Jack but only after I had talked to Gwen. For the past few weeks we had noticed the flirting between James and Emmett and after what James had told me, I wanted to make things right. James deserved to be happy and it seemed they were in love with each other.

Gwen was sitting at her workstation, strangely early for a typical morning. I walked over the popped the bag down on to the desk next to her. She looked up and smiled.

“Ah good morning,” She said with a smile, “Yay, scones again, so did you talk to James?”

“Yes, he apologised, I’m just so worried because of the bipolar,” I replied with a slight frown, “I mean it just scared me, what if he, you know....”

“But he didn’t and that’s the main thing,” Gwen assured me, “So did he keep a list again?”

“Yes, he showed it to me,” I replied trying not to remember the names of all the men, “He said he hasn’t done it since he was twenty.”

Gwen nodded, “Well hopefully he will tell Dr Worthington.”

I nodded and took a scone out of the bag, “That’s not the only thing; he was depressed for three days before the high kicked in.”

“What caused his depression?”

“Rejection, Emmett told him that he didn’t think he deserved James,” I replied biting into my chocolate scone, “After Emmett told James that he loved him.”

“Oh, that’s well.....” Gwen began but we were interrupted by Jack yelling.

“Martha, I want to speak to you in my office now!”
