Chapter Five

James

After Martha finished her examination, she told him to wait while grabbing me by the arm and leading me outside the medical bay. We stopped near the couch and she turned around with a slight smile on her face.

“What?” I asked rather puzzled.

“Did you really want him believe that you weren’t looking at his chest?” Martha replied trying not to laugh. I shrugged while running my hand through my light brown hair, “Oh come on James, you’re the one who said he was handsome on the phone.”

“I only said that because well.....” I began but faltered since I had checked him out at the airbase. I had never looked at another man in that way for a long time. Jack didn’t count since well I didn’t think I’d ever look at him like that. “I know what women are like.” I finished.

Martha smiled, “Fair enough but James you did look at his chest,” She pointed out, causing me to slightly blush.

“Martha, for all we know we might have to send him back,” I protested before Jack interrupted.

“Captain Emmett Kingston disappeared from Cardiff Royal Airbase on the 6th of June 1942 during a training exercise, he was never found.” Jack explained as I looked over to see him standing there with Ianto and Gwen.

“So that means we have to set him up at the motel,” Gwen went on before Jack interrupted again.

“No, as Emmett is technically a local I was thinking he stays with one of us while we help him to settle down,” Jack said with a smile, “I’ve managed to narrow it down even further; it seems he lived in Whitchurch.”

“So it’s me or Martha,” I said with a strange smile.

“Actually it will be you, since well I’m engaged,” Martha replied nudging me on the shoulder, “Besides you have the spare room remember.”

“So with that settled, everyone can go home,” Jack said with a grin before walking off towards his office. Gwen said goodnight to us and left but Ianto stayed behind.

“There’s a box on your desk full of spare clothes for Emmett,” He explained with a smile, “It’s mostly shirts, trousers and underwear.”

“Thanks, at least someone is thinking ahead,” I said with a smile, “Well goodnight,” I told Martha and Ianto before making my way back to the medical bay.

“Sorry about earlier,” I apologised as Emmett and I walked to the car. Emmett was carrying the box but managed to look at me and smile.

“There’s nothing to apologise for, Martha is certainly a very lovely lady,” Emmett explained with a small smile, “I’m guessing though you’re not together.”

“No we’re just friends, she has a fiancé,” I replied rather neutrally, “You’ll be sleeping the spare room,” I added when we got to the car.

“That’s fine, I seemed to guess the couch,” Emmett confessed rather sheepishly, “Well it also seems Ianto Jones is a life saver with these spare clothes.”

“Yes he is,” I replied opening up the boot. Emmett stepped forward and put the box into the boot before looking back at me. He ran a hand through his hair.

“I hope I won’t be too much trouble, if you of course live with someone,” He said rather worriedly and somewhat disappointed.

“No you won’t be, I live alone,” I confessed trying not to sound too solemn. I didn’t know why I was telling him this but I didn’t want him to feel like he was a burden.

“So no girlfriend?” He asked, his tone a mixture of hope and surprise.

“No and no boyfriend either,” I said trying not to laugh, “I’m like you but girls also attract me,”

“Ah you’re like Jack,” Emmett realised with a smile, “Tell me do you have to hide from society?”

I closed the boot while trying to figure out what to tell him. I knew that he was going to ask the question at some point. I cleared my throat.

“Let’s just say society isn’t what it used to be,” I answered before walked around towards the driver’s seat. “There are no laws prohibiting male homosexuality anymore.”

Emmett nodded, “It must be nice,”

“You have no idea,” I told him as I climbed into the car.
