Chapter One

Ianto

I shut the door of the SUV and followed Jack to the hanger where General David Peters was waiting for us. I looked around to see James’ Ford Focus pull up next to the SUV. Gwen had gone with James so Rhys would go home. James climbed out still wearing his blue formal uniform and black trousers while Gwen looked glamorous in her crimson red 40s style gown. Jack smiled when he saw them.

“Ah there’s always been something great about a man in uniform,” Jack said with a smile.

“Yes, Ianto’s looking quite good isn’t he?” James replied. I smiled as he was putting the focus on me instead so he wouldn’t have to feel awkward. Tonight I was in a uniform instead of the usual suit that I wore everyday.

“You’re not looking bad yourself,” I told him as we walked along. Lately I had noticed that James being a bit awkward around Jack. I would find him most nights down in the archives hiding from him. James just looked at me and smiled.

Once we reached the hanger we were met by a tall man in a green military uniform with black hair and an amused expression on his face. He stepped forward to shake Jack’s hand.

“Captain Jack Harkness, I know that you like to wear military attire but the rest of your team....” He began but Jack interrupted.

“Sorry David, we were at a special 40s dance at the newly refurbished dance hall,” Jack said with a smile, “Anyway you said it was urgent?”

“Ah ok, um well this is awkward,” General Peters said, sounding a little taken back, “You see an hour ago, a old spitfire landed out there on the field in pristine condition.”

“You mean like it was brand new?” Jack asked quite surprised.

“Yes, when the men got to it, they found a pilot,” Peters answered, “And if you want to talk to him I will warn you that he thinks this is 1942.”

Jack nodded then turned to all of us, “Alright Gwen and James you go and talk to the pilot while Ianto and I will take a look at the plane.”

Gwen and James followed General Peters towards where they were keeping the pilot while I felt Jack slip his hand through mine and guided me towards the green spitfire that sat in the middle of the hanger.

“Wow, I used to fly one of these back in the day,” Jack explained with a smile, “Training sessions were the worse since that was when the Germans would strike.”

“Did you have to pretend to be an American volunteer?” I asked when he stepped forward to touch it.

“Yes I did,” He replied turning his head slightly to face me, “Oh to flight again would be wonderful.”

I stepped forward and looped my arms around his waist, “Maybe one day you might be able to fly again.”

He softly kissed my forehead and sighed. Continuing to touch it I knew that he was now thinking about the days when he served in World War 2. I had heard many stories and was extremely proud of him. He suddenly clicked out of his daydream and stared at me.

“Hopefully James will explain to the pilot that he isn’t from the 40s,” Jack said with a smile, “I totally forgot about his uniform.”

“Really you commented on it when we got here,” I reminded him, “You just don’t want to remember.”

“Well it’s only because there is a man holding me who looks superb in the uniform I gave him,” He replied with a smile.

“Just don’t alright,” I warned before softly kissing him on the lips.
