Don't look back (Torchwood, Jack/Ianto, James)
Ianto looked out at the rear view mirror at the lonely figure of Captain Jack Harkness standing in the middle of the snow covered road. He knew he had to keep going, to get back to Martha and Gwen who were waiting for them back at the hub, but his heart kept telling him to go back, to help him. Tears were falling from his eyes as he drove on, not wanting to look back.
“Are you alright?” James Elton asked him from the passenger seat.
Ianto didn’t reply but caused the SUV to come to a screeching halt further up the road from where they had dropped Jack off. He turned to James, the tears still evident in his eyes.
“We need to go back; I can’t just leave him there.” Ianto replied before undoing his seatbelt and getting out of the SUV. He slammed the door and started to walk back up the road.
James ran after him and grabbed Ianto’s arm but Ianto tried to shake him off. James though kept hold until he stepped in front of him touching Ianto’s shoulders with both hands. He looked into Ianto’s blue eyes.
“Ianto, we need to get back to the hub.” He told Ianto calmly but firmly. “Martha and Gwen need to know that we are ok.”
“Not without Jack.” Ianto replied pushing past him, “You can go back if you want.”
“Ianto please Jack will be ok.” James called after him. “He will get out this but we won’t if we don’t go back. Jack wants us to be safe.”
Ianto kept walking but called back. “I don’t want to lose him.”
“You won’t but Jack will if you go back.” James replied which made Ianto stop in the middle of the road. James caught up with him and gave him a hug. Ianto stayed silent in his arms except for the tears that fell on to the shoulder of James’ brown jacket.
“I’ll drive us back if you want.” James suggested softly before letting him go. Ianto nodded and walked back with James to the SUV.
He told himself not to look back.
