Chapter five

The room was still empty when I entered it, except for the words on the wall and various furniture. No one had been moved in here which was a relief since if one of those devices was in here then it wouldn’t be used. I had already found the second device in another room and it was now safe in the bag that I’d brought with me. Getting down on to my hands and knees, I started to check under the bed as that’s where the other devices were found. I took out my torch for more light.

I eventually found it near the foot of the bed and safely put it into the bag. No one else was going to disappear now that’s for sure. Well I still had to experiment because it was just a theory but right now it felt safe to assume. I got up and dusted myself off before I heard footsteps and a knock on the door.

“Sorry to interrupt but one of the nurses said that you wanted to talk to one of the patients.” A well spoken English accent said.

“Yes, um I don’t why they told you that unless you’re one of the psychologists?” I answered, not turning around but staying focused on the bed.

“No but you met me a little while ago here, how’s Martha?”

I turned around at those words and was face to face with the man who had attacked Martha. This time though he wore a blue long sleaved shirt and black pants. His black hair was combed back and the stubble was gone from his chin. I guessed that he was little bit older than me, in his early thirties and this time I thought he was quite handsome. Though I started to feel angry for what he did to Martha.

“She’s fine, though how did you know her name?” I asked clenching a fist. He eyed it before answered.

“I have my ways.” He answered walking closer to me until our bodies were almost touching. “I can see that you care for her but there’s no love between you.”

I didn’t reply as I just wanted to punch him right there and then. He had attacked Martha for no good reason. He seemed to have noticed as he said.

“I never meant to hurt her; I just wanted to warn her.” He assured me with a smile. “I saw that device in her hand and.....”

“Do you know what it is?” I asked, hoping he did for some bizarre reason.

“God I love your eyes, soft blue but yet they show darkness.” He replied, sounding a bit like Jack when he first met me, flirty but yet serious. “No but I think they are what caused the patients to disappear.”

“Well thanks but we already have that theory ourselves.” I told him before I felt his hand on my neck, tickling it, causing a shiver down my spine. It caused me to close my eyes for the moment. This never happened when I met Jack as he never touched me. Though at the time I never felt attracted to him, right now I didn’t know what I felt for the man who stood in front of me.

“Meet me at the cafe down near Roald Dahl Plass at three o’clock.” He said quite close to my face, his lips almost touching mine. “There’s some stuff I need to talk to you about.”

“Will the nurses let you?” I asked, opening my eyes and stepping back a bit.

“Actually I’m not even a real patient.” He answered.

I heard a scream outside.

“Jack, what are you doing?” I asked when I walked outside too see Jack standing there while too nurses carried away an elderly looking man.

“Sorry I wanted to see how you were getting on.” He replied, giving his cheesiest grin. “But I bumped into that man again.”

I nodded and held up the bag. “You were right about the devices.”

He eyed the bag. “Ah so now you can do that experiment, though you might have to get someone to help you.”

The man from the room stepped out and walked past us, giving me a wink on the way. Jack noticed this and gave me a grin.

“Who was that?” He asked, giving me a suggestive look.

“That’s what I want to know.” I replied with a frown.
