DDL too good for the movie? For me, the film's flaw is that Paul Dano was simply miscast. Dano was originally cast for just the character of Paul,,, Having him play both Eli/Paul created a distracting debate and catapulted DDL's role and I agree he was no rival... but that is also sort of the point for me Big oil has never had anything close to a rival, and of the many metaphors in the movie, to me that seems to be one of the strongest
True enough about big oil, but it lessened the dramatic impact for me. Plus, DDL isn't quite Big Oil, as he does battle with them too. He obviously represents unbridled capitalism and how it destroys everything in his path, and I think he does so well. It did seem at times like the movie worked better on a metaphorical level than it did with what was on screen.
In any case, it was an excellent film, but I didn't quite respond to it as well as I'd hoped, hence the score.
