What are you, a critic or something? I can't believe you actually typed "instant classic" & meant it.

Off the top of my head,
5. The Insider - slow movie, excellent performances
4. Mystery, Alaska - fun movie, alright performances
3. Gladiator - in my opinion, not as good as all the glowing reviews
2. A Beautiful Mind - fucking awe-inspiring performance, much more worthy of the Oscar than his Gladiator nod
1. L.A. Confidential - this movie is all parts awesome, & despite sharing the billing with basically an ensemble cast, Crowe brought so much intensity to the table he was almost head & shoulders above every once. But then again, everyone is awesome in it.

Master & Commander didn't make the list for the same reason as you, good to watch once, rewatchability quotient minimal.

Why Gladiator is an Instant Classic andythesaint September 27 2004, 21:28:45 UTC
I did say that 2001 was an off year in terms of Oscar nominees, but I stand by my instant classic rating. Here's why: I know "smart" movie goers loooove their little films that they feel they personally discovered and the masses could never truly appreciate. It makes us feel superior. How fun is it to say that your favourite movie is one that made millions of dollars and was heavily promoted and seen by everyone? When people say their favourite film is some Hollywood blockbuster, some people (you know who you are) will make silent judgements about their sophistication.

I'm not above this, look at my top five, only one blockbuster in the bunch (which is more a nod to my other sub-culture). The other four are movies that barely made any money (if they did at all). Smaller movies are often more intelligent and more personal. However, there's something to be said about filmmaking on an epic scale. It's not an easy thing to do. It's even harder to do and not seem superficial or corny in our cynical times. Gladiator, in many ways, ( ... )

Yeah, but everytime I think of the movie Gladiator, I either think of the Cuba Gooding one (bwahahhaa) or Kurt Angle saying he likes Gladiator movies (even more bwahahaha).

I'd bother... oyaguy September 28 2004, 21:08:24 UTC
I'd bother doing a Russel Crowe list except the only differences would be the order, The Insider would be off, Master and Commander on, and that's about it.
