Before I get to my lists, I just have a friendly request for all the budding movie reviewers out there. Under the
Movie Reviews Index there's a sub-heading for all
Best Picture Oscar Award-winners that we've had reviewed for the community. For a list of past Best Pictures, check out
IMDB's list & see if there are any that you'd like to review. There's no sign up thing or anything, in fact the more the better.
Most of the Best Picture nominees for this year I haven't seen, & probably won't see for awhile. I didn't go to the movies as much as I'd have liked to either, so these lists aren't the most authoratative ones that I've ever done, just the best for now. There are three categories for my Year-End movie lists this year: Bottom Five, ones that I pretty much knew were bad going in and had my suspicions confirmed; Disappointing Five, ones that had the potential to be great, but for whatever reasons just missed the boat; Top Five, the best of the 2005 that I've watched.
The Bottom Five Movies of 2005 That I Watched
5. Elektra (
my review) - I didn't expect much outta this one, and that's what I got
4. Must Love Dogs (
my review) - normally any John Cusack movie that's bad would go on a Most Disappointing List, but as soon as I saw the premise behind this one, I knew there'd be few things good about it
3. Guess Who (
my review) - Hopefully something very heavy falls on Ashton Kutcher this year.. something like one of Demi Moore's boobs
2. Robots (
my review) - Dreamworks animation proves once again why they buhlow compared to Pixar
1. Fever Pitch (
my review) - fuck, I hate Jimmy Fallon, & I've never been that big a fan of Drew Barrymore either.. & the Farrellys man.. basebal.. why did I even watch this?
The Five Most Disappointing Movies of 2005 That I Watched
5. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe (
my review) - yeah, this movie was 3.5 / 5 but I was totally expecting it to blow every Lord of the Rings movie out of the water
4. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (
my review) - the Prequel Trilogy that never should have been is done, more with a whimper than a bang
3. Fantastic Four (
my review) - the ads made it look good, but I think I knew deep down that it wasn't going to be great
2. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (
my review) - with top-notch talents in Pitt, Jolie, Vaughn, Brody acting & with Doug Liman directing, this should've been better than it turned out
1. Be Cool (
my review) - after watching Get Shorty and reading the Elmore Leonard book Be Cool, one couldn't help but be saddened that the movie treatment isn't up to the level of the past works
Top Five Movies of 2005 That I Watched
5. Sin City (
my review) - probably the most faithful comic book movie of all time, and one of the most gorgeous-looking pictures of the year.. plus there's all them girls with guns too
4. Wedding Crashers (
my review) - Walken, Vaughn, Owen Wilson, hot babes, unexpected comedy all the way through, one of the most surprisingly enjoyable comedies to come along in years
3. The 40 Year-Old Virgin (
my review) - I've sat down and tried to write a review for this movie about five times since I watched it, but I never feel like I can do it any justice.. like Andy's first time, it'll probably be unsatisfactory, but Judd Apatow's movie was fucking excellent
2. Serenity (
my review) - I'd never watched a minute of Firefly before I watched this movie, and I was completely swept up in yet another world that Joss Whedon had created
1. Batman Begins (
my review) - Christian Bale as Batman? It seems so perfect that you wonder why it was never done before
