I guess failed is the wrong word. Short-lived would be a better term. The original Star Trek lasted only three seasons, getting low ratings in those seasons. Then they released movies, and the franchise took off.
It's no Law & Order feat, but three years and nearly 80 episodes isn't exactly short-lived. Low ratings are to be expected when a show is thrown in the horrible Friday night slots.
It was cancelled before the creators wanted it to be, so that makes it less than successful (during its original run). I think three seasons is short-lived. Not as short-lived as the other shows on the list, but a lot shorter lived than, say, any other Star Trek series.
