I've never been but everyone tells me that the almost-scary mom-and-pop places serving katsu and such in strip malls can rock. It's what Hawaiians actually eat. We have a number of places her in Seattle serving what's known as "plate lunch" with the ubiquitous macaroni salad. Even if you go just as an anthropologist, it could be fascinating.
That sounds like EXACTLY what I'm looking for, actually since a) I'm from Tennessee and I love the little mom-and/or pop-and-pop stores and b) I'm poor, and I prefer good food for little money.
I can promise you the Mai Tai at Angles (Kuhio and Seaside) are MUCH better than those at Hulas (Kapahulu at the park).
On Kuo, behind Kalakaua near a icky shopping center, there's an Udon noodle counter where all the Japanese people go. I never miss it.
Queen's Surf is the gay beach, at the Diamond-Head end of Waikiki. First, go to Food Pantry grocery store at Kuhio and Kanekapolei and buy a cold spicy chicken Korean rice bento box, then take it to Queen's Surf and eat it and look at the boys and remember your dear sweet Auntie Lukers.
Well, Tom and I went the week before July 4th in 2005 so school was out and the place was overrun with families and kids.
By the way, do yourself a favor and rent a car for at least one day and drive the island. Once you get out of Waikiki, it gets very quiet and there are a slew of spectacular secluded beaches all along the windward side of the island that, IMO, are must-sees. Kailua in particular was totally stunning. As was Shark's Cove.
(P.S. the icon is me snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, another must-see!)
We're renting a car for three days, and we've devoted one full day to driving around the island. I personally don't think we'll need the car any more than that, but what do I know?
In my opinion, there are no "must visit food places" in that area. I have been there twice and the best meal we had "out" was at a Brazillian Steak House there in Waikiki.
You are better off buying food and cooking it yourself. But, you will have a GREAT time. Be sure to visit the Pearl Harbor museum. It is worth seeing.
