He thinks they might turn it into a right-wing scare about arming minorities and encouraging them to breed. I've got an even more cynical theory. I don't think it would change anything at all

Ironically, the NRA has filed some court briefs that could have lost more gun rights... in order to exacerbate the gun battle. They're not fighting to win the thing, they're fighting to prolong.

Which is to say, the Board of Directors that took over around ten years ago knows they have a great thing going, and they're milking it for every dime it's worth. The poster child for the change was Wayne Lapierre, who makes about $1M a year as the vice president; that's 35,000 memberships to pay for him alone.
